Becoming the Duke of Burgundy
Hugh became the Duke of Burgundy in 1306. This happened after his father, Duke Robert II, passed away. As Duke, Hugh was in charge of a large and important region in what is now France.
A Royal Engagement
In 1302, Hugh was promised in marriage to a young woman named Catherine of Valois. This kind of promise is called a betrothal. Catherine was also from a very important royal family. However, their engagement was later called off on September 30, 1312. Hugh never married and did not have any children that we know of.
A King Without a Kingdom
Hugh V was also involved in the Crusader movement. Crusaders were groups of people, often knights and soldiers, who went on religious wars. He also held a special title: titular King of Thessalonica.
Selling a Title
Being a "titular" king meant he had the title of king, but he didn't actually rule the Kingdom of Thessalonica. This kingdom was in Greece and had been created during an earlier Crusade. In 1313, Hugh sold this kingly title. He sold it to his younger brother, Louis. In return, Louis gave up his own rights to the region of Burgundy.
Succession and Legacy
Hugh V died in 1315 when he was around 30 or 31 years old. After his death, his younger brother, Odo IV, became the new Duke of Burgundy.
