Henry of England was a young prince who lived a very short life in the 13th century. Born on May 6, 1268, he was the son of Edward I of England, who later became King of England, and his first wife, Eleanor of Castile. Henry was their fifth child and second son.

Prince Henry's Early Life

Henry was born at Windsor Castle, a famous royal home. His grandfather, Henry III of England, was the king at that time.

When Henry was about three years old, his older brother John passed away. This meant that Henry became the oldest surviving child of his parents. He was now second in line to the English throne.

In 1272, his grandfather King Henry III died. Henry's father, Edward, then became the new King of England. This made young Henry the heir apparent, meaning he was next in line to become king. In 1273, when he was just five, Henry was promised in marriage to Joan I of Navarre, a princess from another kingdom.

Henry's Final Days

In 1274, Prince Henry became very ill at Guildford, England. At this time, his parents, King Edward I and Queen Eleanor, were away on a long journey called a Crusade. A Crusade was a religious military journey to the Holy Land.

Because his parents were far away, Henry was cared for by his grandmother, Eleanor of Provence. She had looked after him for four years while his parents were gone. His grandmother was very familiar to him and was able to comfort him during his illness.

Henry had always been a sickly child. Perhaps his parents did not realize how serious his illness was until it was too late for them to reach him. He passed away from natural causes at the age of six. Henry was buried in Westminster Abbey, a very important church where many English kings and queens are laid to rest.
