Abby Mann (born December 1, 1927 – died March 25, 2008) was an American writer and producer for movies and television. He was known for telling stories that made people think about important social issues.
Life and Career
Abby Mann was born Abraham Goodman in Philadelphia. His parents were immigrants from Russia. He grew up in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He became famous for writing about serious topics and social problems. His most well-known work is the movie script for Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). This story was first a TV show in 1959.
The movie version was directed by Stanley Kramer. Abby Mann won an Academy Award for his script. This award is one of the biggest honors in filmmaking. When he accepted his award, he said:
A writer worth his salt at all has an obligation not only to entertain but to comment on the world in which he lives.
This means he believed writers should not just entertain, but also share their thoughts about the world.
Mann later helped bring Judgment at Nuremberg to Broadway as a play in 2001. He worked with Stanley Kramer on other movies too, like Ship of Fools and A Child Is Waiting.
For television, Abby Mann created the popular series Kojak. This show starred Telly Savalas. Mann was an executive producer for Kojak and also wrote many episodes.
He also wrote scripts for several TV movies. These include The Marcus-Nelson Murders, The Atlanta Child Murders, and Teamster Boss: The Jackie Presser Story. He also directed a TV miniseries called King in 1978.
Personal Life
Abby Mann was married to Myra Maislin. Myra had two children from a previous marriage. One of her children is Aaron Cohen, who became a former Israeli Special Forces operative.
Abby Mann passed away from heart failure in Beverly Hills, California, on March 25, 2008. He was 80 years old. He is buried in Culver City's Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.
