Gertrude Maud Barnes (born March 25, 1903 – died July 27, 1998), known to everyone as Binnie Barnes, was a talented English actress. She starred in many movies from 1923 all the way to 1973.
Early Life
Binnie Barnes was born in Islington, a part of London, England. Her dad, George Barnes, was a policeman. Binnie grew up in a very big family with 15 brothers and sisters! Before she became a famous actress, Binnie had many different jobs. She worked as a chorus girl, a nurse, and even a dance hostess.
Acting Career
Binnie Barnes started her acting journey in 1923. Her very first appearance was in a short film. This film used a special new technology for sound, called Phonofilm.
She continued making movies in Great Britain. One of her most famous roles was in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933). In this film, she played Katherine Howard, who was King Henry VIII's fifth wife. Binnie was very clear about the types of roles she wanted. She once said she didn't want to play characters who were too sweet or weak. She liked strong roles!
Later, Binnie moved to Hollywood to continue her career. She kept acting until 1973. Her very last movie role was in the comedy film 40 Carats.
Personal Life
Binnie Barnes was married twice. Her first husband was Samuel Joseph, an art dealer from London. Later, she married Mike Frankovich, who was a film producer. Binnie became a citizen of the United States. She and Mike adopted three children together.
Binnie Barnes passed away peacefully on July 27, 1998, when she was 95 years old. She died in Beverly Hills, California. Her resting place is at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale.
