Important Events of 1782
- On January 7, the first commercial bank in America, called the Bank of North America, opened its doors.
- Just a week later, on January 15, Robert Morris, who was in charge of money for the U.S. Congress, suggested creating a national place to make coins, called a mint. He also suggested using a decimal system for money, like we do today.
- On February 5, Spanish forces won a victory against British forces and took control of Minorca, an island in the Mediterranean Sea.
- A sad event happened on March 8 in Ohio. White militiamen killed 90 Native Americans (29 men, 27 women, and 34 children) in a place called Gnadenhutten. This was done in revenge for attacks by another Native American group.
- On April 6, Rama I became the new king of Thailand. He took over after King Taksin was removed from power.
- A big naval battle took place on April 12. A British fleet led by Admiral Sir George Rodney defeated a French fleet in the Battle of the Saintes in the West Indies.
- In Switzerland, on June 18, Anna Goldi was sentenced to death. This was the last time someone was legally sentenced for witchcraft.
