Wars and Conflicts
The year 1545 saw a lot of fighting, especially between England and France. King Henry VIII of England and King Francis I of France were in a long war. France wanted to invade England, and England was trying to defend its coast.
The Battle of the Solent
One of the most famous events of 1545 was the Battle of the Solent. This naval battle happened on July 18 and July 19 near the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. The French fleet, which was much larger, tried to attack the English ships.
During this battle, a very famous English warship, the Mary Rose, sank. The Mary Rose was a powerful ship, but it capsized and sank quickly, taking most of its crew with it. Historians still debate exactly why it sank, but it was a big loss for the English navy. Despite the loss of the Mary Rose, the English managed to stop the French invasion.
