Early History (Before 1600)
- 686 – Yuknoom Yichʼaak Kʼahkʼ, a powerful Maya king, became the ruler of Calakmul.
- 1043 – Edward the Confessor was crowned King of England.
- 1077 – The first state of Friuli, called the Patriarchate of Friûl, was created.
- 1559 – The Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis was signed. This treaty helped end the long Italian Wars.
From 1601 to 1900
- 1721 – Robert Walpole became a very important leader in Great Britain. He is often seen as the first Prime Minister, even though he didn't use that title himself.
- 1851 – Rama IV became the King of Thailand. This happened after his half-brother, Rama III, passed away.
- 1860 – The very first successful Pony Express mail delivery started. It went from St. Joseph, Missouri, all the way to Sacramento, California.
- 1865 – During the American Civil War, Union soldiers took control of Richmond, Virginia. This city was the capital of the Confederate States of America.
- 1885 – Gottlieb Daimler received a German patent for a new type of engine. Seven months later, he used it to create the world's first motorcycle, the Daimler Reitwagen.

- 1922 – Joseph Stalin became the first General Secretary of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union.
- 1933 – The British Houston-Mount Everest Flight Expedition made the first flight over Mount Everest. It was led by the Marquis of Clydesdale.
- 1942 – During World War II, Japanese forces began an attack on American and Filipino troops. This happened on the Bataan Peninsula.
- 1946 – Japanese Lt. General Masaharu Homma was held responsible for the difficult Bataan Death March.
- 1948 – During the Cold War, U.S. President Harry S. Truman signed the Marshall Plan. This plan provided a lot of help to 16 countries.
- 1956 – A very powerful F5 tornado, known as the Hudsonville–Standale tornado, hit Michigan.
- 1968 – Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech.
- 1969 – During the Vietnam War, United States Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird announced a plan. The United States would start to "Vietnamize" the war effort.
- 1973 – Martin Cooper of Motorola made the first handheld mobile phone call. He called Joel S. Engel at Bell Labs.
- 1974 – The 1974 Super Outbreak happened. This was the second largest tornado outbreak ever recorded.
- 1975 – The Vietnam War was ending. Operation Babylift began, which was a large effort to evacuate children.
- 1975 – Bobby Fischer chose not to play in a chess match against Anatoly Karpov. This meant Karpov became the World Champion.
