- April 7 – The explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, reached the end of the Mississippi River in America. He had been exploring rivers.
- April 9 – Near where the Mississippi River meets the sea, La Salle claimed a huge area for France. He called this land "La Louisiane." This is near where Venice, Louisiana, is today.
