Important Events of 1761
- January 14 – A major battle, known as the Third Battle of Panipat, took place in India. It was fought between the Marathas, a powerful group from India, and the Afghans, who were invaders from Afghanistan. The Afghans won this battle.
- January 16 – The British army took control of Pondicherry, a city in India, from the French. This was part of a larger conflict between Britain and France.
- In Dutch Guayana (which is now Suriname), a group of people who had escaped slavery formed their own independent community. They signed a peace treaty with the local governor, which recognized their freedom.
- The famous song Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star was published in France. This beloved children's song is still sung all over the world today.
- June 6 – A rare event called a Transit of Venus happened. This is when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth, appearing as a small black dot moving across the Sun's face. Scientists observed this event from 120 different places around the world to help them measure the size of the Solar System.
- The Soho Manufactory opened in England. This was a large factory owned by Matthew Boulton, where many different goods, including metal items and coins, were made using new industrial methods.
- In the Funj Sultanate (an old kingdom in what is now Sudan), a powerful leader named Muhammad Abu al Kaylak took control. He was the vizier, a high-ranking official, and he carried out a coup (a sudden takeover of power) in the palace. This made the sultan, who was the ruler, a figurehead, meaning he still had the title but no real power.
