Key Events of 1718
Peace Treaties and Wars
- On July 21, an important agreement called the Treaty of Passarowitz was signed. A treaty is like a big promise or contract between different countries. This treaty helped to end a war between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy (a powerful European family). It changed who controlled certain lands in Europe.
- Later in the year, on December 17, three powerful countries – Austria, Great Britain, and France – declared war on Spain. This started a conflict known as the War of the Quadruple Alliance. An alliance is when countries team up together. In this case, four countries (Austria, Britain, France, and the Dutch Republic) joined forces against Spain. They were trying to stop Spain from taking back lands it had lost in earlier wars.
Famous Pirate Blackbeard's Last Battle
- One of the most famous events of 1718 happened on November 22. Off the coast of Virginia, the well-known English pirate Blackbeard (whose real name was Edward Teach) was killed. He died in a fierce battle against a British naval group. Blackbeard was cornered by the British boarding party, and he fought bravely until the end. His death marked a big moment in the fight against piracy.
Changes in Leadership
- On November 30, Ulrika Eleonora became the new Queen of Sweden. This happened after the death of her brother, King Charles XII of Sweden. When a king or queen dies, the next person in line, often a family member, takes over the throne.
- In the Funj Sultanate (a kingdom in what is now Sudan), there was a change in leadership. The powerful warrior leaders, known as the aristocracy, removed the current ruler (called the mek). They then put one of their own members on the throne of Sennar. This showed how much power the warriors had in that kingdom.
Notable Births in 1718
- March 31 – Mariana Victoria of Spain was born. She later became the queen regent of Portugal. A queen regent is a queen who rules for a young king or queen who is not old enough yet.
- November 3 – John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich was born. He was an important English statesman, which means he was a leader in the government. He is also famously known for inspiring the invention of the sandwich!
Notable Deaths in 1718
- May 7 – Mary of Modena passed away. She was the queen of James II of England.
- July 30 – William Penn died. He was an American settler and the founder of the state of Pennsylvania. He was important for creating a place where people could live freely.
- November 22 – The famous pirate Blackbeard died in battle, as mentioned earlier.
- November 30 – King Charles XII of Sweden passed away. His death led to his sister, Ulrika Eleonora, becoming queen.
- December 10 – Stede Bonnet, another well-known pirate often called the "gentleman pirate," also died this year.
