Early Life and Music Beginnings
Sebastian Bach was born in the Bahamas. His father, David Bierk, was a well-known artist. In the early 1970s, his family moved to Peterborough, Ontario, where Sebastian grew up. He is one of eight children, and his brother Zac Bierk was a professional ice hockey player.
Sebastian's father, David Bierk (who passed away in 2002), painted the covers for some of Skid Row's albums, including Slave to the Grind and Subhuman Race. He also created art for Sebastian's solo albums, Angel Down and Give 'Em Hell.
When Sebastian was eight years old, he joined a church choir. He loved singing "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" and knew from that moment that he wanted to sing for the rest of his life. He attended Lakefield College School in Ontario.
Music Career Highlights
Starting with Kid Wikkid
In 1983, at just 14 years old, Sebastian auditioned for a band called Kid Wikkid, based in Peterborough, Ontario. He was hired by the band's guitar player, Jason Delorme. Kid Wikkid later moved to Toronto, and Sebastian's family allowed him to live with an aunt to continue with the band.
Success with Skid Row
Skid Row formed in the mid-1980s. After their first singer left in 1987, the band needed a new lead vocalist. Sebastian was seen singing at a wedding by Jon Bon Jovi's parents, who suggested he contact their son's friend, Dave Sabo, who was looking for a singer.
Sebastian was careful about joining another band, but after hearing Skid Row's demo tapes, he flew to New Jersey to audition. He became their lead singer in early 1987.
Skid Row became very successful in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their first two albums, Skid Row (1989) and Slave to the Grind (1991), sold millions of copies. Slave to the Grind even reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Their third album, Subhuman Race (1995), was also well-received.
In 1989, Sebastian wore a T-shirt that caused controversy. He later said it was "really stupid and wrong" to wear it. In 2000, he donated $12,000 of his own money to fight AIDS, showing his support for the cause.
Sebastian left Skid Row in 1996 after disagreements with the other band members. There were rumors that he didn't want the band to open for Kiss, while other band members had different plans. This led to him leaving the group.
Broadway and Other Projects
After leaving Skid Row, Sebastian explored other projects. In 1996, he joined a group called The Last Hard Men, which included members from other famous bands. They recorded an album, but it was released in a very limited way.
In 1999, Sebastian released his first solo album, Bring 'Em Bach Alive!. It mostly featured live versions of Skid Row songs, but it also had five new studio songs.
In 2000, Sebastian started performing on Broadway. He played the main roles in Jekyll & Hyde and also appeared in The Rocky Horror Show in 2001. He also performed at a benefit concert called New York Steel after the events of 9/11.
In 2002, he hosted a show called VH1's Forever Wild. He also played the main role in a touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar. A DVD of his live performances, Forever Wild, was released in 2004.
From 2003 to 2007, Sebastian had a recurring role as "Gil," the lead guitarist in Lane Kim's band, Hep Alien, on the TV show Gilmore Girls. In 2005, he sang on the Frameshift album An Absence of Empathy.
Sebastian also joined Axl Rose on stage for several Guns N' Roses shows in 2006, singing the song "My Michelle". Axl Rose mentioned that they had become friends again after many years.
Reality TV and Solo Albums
In 2006, Sebastian starred in the VH1 reality show Supergroup. On the show, he and other musicians formed a heavy metal supergroup called Damnocracy. The show followed them as they lived together and tried to create music.
In 2007, Sebastian released his solo album Angel Down. He also sang backing vocals for the song "Sorry" on Guns N' Roses' album Chinese Democracy, which came out in 2008. He toured with bands like Poison and Dokken.
Sebastian also competed on reality TV shows like Celebrity Rap Superstar (2007) and Gone Country (2008), which he won.
New Music and Tours
Sebastian continued to tour with Guns N' Roses in 2009–2010. In 2010, he voiced Prince Triton in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants called "SpongeBob and the Clash of Triton".
In 2011, Sebastian released his solo album Kicking & Screaming. He also performed with the band Asking Alexandria and appeared in their music video.
In 2013, Sebastian announced he was working on a new studio album. He collaborated with musicians like John 5, Duff McKagan, and Steve Stevens. The album, Give 'Em Hell, was released on April 22, 2014. He also appeared in two episodes of Trailer Park Boys that year.
In 2019, Sebastian toured to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Skid Row's first album, playing it live in its entirety. In 2021, he toured again for the 30th anniversary of Skid Row's Slave to the Grind.
