Poison is an American heavy metal and glam metal band. They became very popular from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. The band has sold over 15 million records in the United States. Worldwide, they have sold more than 50 million albums.
Poison has had ten songs reach the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. Six of these songs made it into the Top 10. Their song "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" even reached number one.
The band's first big album was Look What the Cat Dragged In, released in 1986. This album sold many copies. Their next album, Open Up and Say... Ahh!, sold even more, reaching 5 times platinum in the U.S. Their third successful album was Flesh & Blood.
The most well-known members of the band are the original members: Bret Michaels (lead singer and rhythm guitarist), Rikki Rockett (drummer), Bobby Dall (bassist and pianist), and C.C. DeVille (lead guitarist and backing vocalist).
In the 1990s, after their first live album Swallow This Live, the band had some changes in its members. The music scene also changed with the rise of grunge music. However, Poison's fourth studio album, Native Tongue, still sold well and earned a Gold award. Their first collection of hit songs, Poison's Greatest Hits: 1986–1996, sold double platinum.
Poison in the 2000s and Beyond
In 1999, the original band members got back together for a tour. They started the new century with a new album called Crack a Smile... and More!. This was followed by the album Power to the People.
In 2002, they released the album Hollyweird. In 2006, the band celebrated their 20th anniversary. They went on "The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock" tour and released an album with the same name. This album earned a Gold award. It also brought Poison back to the top 20 charts for the first time since 1993.
The band members have also released their own solo music. Some have even appeared on TV shows. After more than 30 years, Poison is still making music and performing live. Since their first album in 1986, they have released seven studio albums, four live albums, and five collection albums. They have also released 28 singles to radio. In 2012, VH1 ranked Poison as the number one "Hair Band of the '80s."
