Eileen Mary Ure (born February 18, 1933 – died April 3, 1975) was a talented actress from Scotland. She became famous for her work in both plays and movies. Mary Ure was the second Scottish actress ever to be nominated for an Academy Award. This was for her role in the 1960 film Sons and Lovers.

Early Life and Training
Mary Ure was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Her father, Colin McGregor Ure, was a civil engineer. Her mother was Edith Swinburne. Mary went to a school called Mount School in York. In 1951, she played the role of the Virgin Mary in a special play.
She studied acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. This school was located at the Royal Albert Hall. One of her classmates there was the actress Wendy Craig. Mary Ure was known for her beauty and quickly became a respected dramatic actress on the London stage.
Acting Career
Mary Ure started her acting career in London in 1954. Her first play was "Time Remembered." She made her first movie appearance in Storm Over The Nile in 1955. In this film, she played the love interest of the main character.
In 1955, she played Ophelia in a stage production of Hamlet. This play starred Paul Scofield and was later filmed for television. She also appeared in a London play called A View from the Bridge in 1956.
Famous Stage Roles
Mary Ure took on a major role as Alison Porter in John Osborne's new play Look Back in Anger (1956). This play became very popular. She later performed in the Broadway production of Look Back in Anger in 1958. For this role, she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Dramatic Actress.
She also spent a season at Stratford, performing in classic plays. These included A Midsummer Night's Dream (1959) and Othello (1959). After making a movie, she returned to the stage in Duel of Angels in London and Broadway. She also performed in The Changeling in London in 1960.
Notable Film Roles
After her stage success, Mary Ure brought her role as Alison Porter to the big screen. She starred in the 1959 film version of Look Back in Anger. Her next big film was Sons and Lovers (1960). In this movie, she played Clara Dawes. Her performance earned her nominations for both a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The success of Sons and Lovers made many people think Mary Ure would become a major movie star in America. In 1963, she returned to film in the sci-fi drama The Mind Benders. She played the wife of Dirk Bogarde in this movie.
She also appeared in several films with her husband at the time, Robert Shaw. These included The Luck of Ginger Coffey (1964) and Custer of the West (1967). Her last major film role was in Where Eagles Dare in 1968. She later appeared in A Reflection of Fear in 1971.
Personal Life
In 1957, Mary Ure married playwright John Osborne. They had a son together in 1961. However, they later divorced in 1963.
Mary Ure then married actor Robert Shaw in 1963. Robert Shaw adopted Mary's son from her first marriage. Mary and Robert had three more children together. One of their children is the actor Ian Shaw, who was born in 1969. Mary Ure and Robert Shaw were still married when she passed away.
Later Years
Mary Ure continued to act on stage and television in her later years. She returned to Broadway in 1971 in a play called Old Times. Her last appearance on screen was in a TV show called The Break in 1974.
She also returned to the London stage in 1975 after a 12-year break. She appeared in a play called The Exorcism. Sadly, on April 3, 1975, Mary Ure passed away at the age of 42. Her husband, Robert Shaw, found her at their home in London.
