Early Times (Before 1600)
- 536 – During the Gothic War, the Byzantine general Belisarius entered the city of Rome without a fight. The Gothic soldiers defending the city left, allowing Belisarius to take control.
- 730 – In the Battle of Marj Ardabil, the Khazars defeated a large Umayyad army and killed its commander, al-Jarrah ibn Abdallah al-Hakami.
- 1432 – The first major battle of the Lithuanian Civil War took place near the town of Ashmyany. This battle marked the start of the most active part of the war between the forces of Švitrigaila and Sigismund Kęstutaitis.
- 1531 – According to tradition, the Virgin of Guadalupe first appeared to Juan Diego at Tepeyac, which is now part of Mexico City.
Modern History (1601–1900)
- 1636 – The Qing dynasty of China, led by Emperor Hong Taiji, began its invasion of Joseon (which is modern-day Korea).
- 1688 – As part of the Glorious Revolution, forces loyal to William defeated the Jacobites at the Battle of Reading. This defeat forced King James II to leave England. (This date is based on the Old Style calendar; in today's calendar, it would be December 19.)
- 1775 – During the American Revolutionary War, British troops and their supporters, called Loyalists, lost the Battle of Great Bridge in Virginia. They had been given wrong information about how strong the Patriot militia was. This battle ended British rule in Virginia.
- 1822 – French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel introduced new terms like linear polarization, circular polarization, and elliptical polarization in a paper for the French Academy of Sciences. He also showed through experiments that his idea about optical rotation (how light twists) being a type of birefringence (how light splits) was correct.
- 1824 – Patriot forces, led by General Antonio José de Sucre, defeated a Royalist army in the Battle of Ayacucho. This victory brought an end to the Peruvian War of Independence.
- 1835 – During the Texas Revolution, the Texian Army successfully captured San Antonio after a long fight known as the Siege of Béxar.
- 1851 – The first YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) in North America was started in Montreal, Canada.
- 1856 – The Iranian city of Bushehr surrendered to British forces who had been occupying it.
- 1861 – During the American Civil War, the U.S. Congress created the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War to oversee how the war was being fought.
