Early Life and Education
Ubbo Emmius was born on December 5, 1547, in a place called Greetsiel, in East Frisia. From when he was 9 until he was 18, Emmius went to a Latin school. He had to leave school when his father, who was a Lutheran preacher, passed away. Later, when he was 30, Emmius studied in Geneva. He took classes with Theodorus Beza, a Calvinist teacher who greatly influenced him.
His Career and Founding a University
When Emmius returned to East Friesland in 1579, he became the head teacher, or rector, at the same school he had attended in Norden. However, he was later fired in 1587. This happened because he was a Calvinist and would not agree with the Confession of Augsburg, which was a Lutheran belief.
After this, in 1588, a Calvinist leader named Johan offered him a new job. Emmius became the rector of the Latin school in Leer. This school was later renamed the Ubbo-Emmius-Gymnasium in his honor. While he was in Leer, Emmius wrote letters to many important people. These were people who had left Groningen when the Spanish took control of the area.
In 1594, when Groningen was taken back by Prince Maurits, those who had fled returned. They offered Ubbo Emmius the job of rector at St. Maarten school. In 1614, people decided to start a university in Groningen. Emmius was a key person in setting it up. Because of his hard work, he was chosen to be the first principal and a professor of history and Greek. He became the very first rector magnificus (head leader) of the new Academy he helped create.
His Important Works
Ubbo Emmius made big contributions to history writing. His main works were about the history of the Frisian lands. These were called Rerum Frisicarum historiae decades and were published in six parts between 1592 and 1616.

In another important book called the Chronologicum, he compared the histories of different nations. He looked at how they used different calendars to keep track of time.
Other books he wrote include:
- Opus chronologicum (published in Groningen, 1619)
- Vetus Graecia illustrata (published in Leiden, 1626)
- Historia temporis nostri, which was first published in Groningen in 1732
A story about his life was written by Nicholas Mulerius. It was published in 1638 along with the lives of other professors from Groningen.
Death
Ubbo Emmius passed away on December 9, 1625, in Groningen. His gravestone has a special message that reads:
For the immortal memory of the famous and faithful old man Ubbo Emmius, a Frisian from Greetsiel, first rector of the academy, theologist of the pure doctrine, excellent philologist, perfect historian.
