Frisia facts for kids
Frisia is a region found along the coast of the North Sea. People called Frisians have lived in this area for a very long time. Today, parts of Frisia are in the Netherlands, especially the Dutch province of Friesland (also known as Fryslân). Other parts are in Germany and Denmark.
History of Frisia
Long ago, Frisia was an independent area. However, two important Frisian leaders, Wijerd Jelckama and Pier Gerlofs Donia, led a fight against powerful groups called the Burgundians and the Saxons. Sadly, they lost this fight. Because of this defeat, Frisia lost its independence.
Less than 100 years later, some parts of Frisia were taken over by the Netherlands. These areas are now part of the modern country of the Netherlands.
Languages of Frisia
Many different languages are spoken in Frisia, showing its rich culture. The main languages are different types of Frisian. These include West Frisian (called Frysk), North Frisian (with names like Frasch, Fresk, Freesk, or Friisk), and Saterland Frisian.
Besides Frisian, people also speak Low German (like East Frisian and Gronings), Dutch, German, and Danish.
