Eloise Jarvis McGraw (born December 9, 1915 – died November 30, 2000) was an American writer. She wrote many popular books for children and young adults.

Writing Career

Eloise McGraw also helped continue the famous Oz book series. This series was first started by L. Frank Baum. She worked with her daughter, Lauren Lynn McGraw (Wagner), on two Oz books: Merry Go Round in Oz and The Forbidden Fountain of Oz.

Even though Eloise did all the actual writing, Lauren helped a lot with the stories. Because of Lauren's help, Eloise gave her credit as a co-author. Eloise McGraw's book The Rundelstone of Oz was published in 2000. Her daughter was not credited as a co-author for this book.

Another author, Gina Wickwar, said that Eloise McGraw helped her edit her book, The Hidden Prince of Oz, which came out in 2000.

Awards and Recognition

Eloise McGraw won the Newbery Honor award three times. This is a very important award for children's books. She won it for her novels Moccasin Trail (1952), The Golden Goblet (1962), and "The Moorchild" (1997).

Her book A Really Weird Summer (1977) won an Edgar Award. This award is given for the best mystery book for young people by the Mystery Writers of America.

Eloise McGraw was very interested in history. Many of her books for children are historical stories. Some of these include Greensleeves, The Seventeenth Swap, The Striped Ships, and Mara, Daughter of the Nile. Moccasin Trail also received a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1963.

Personal Life

Eloise McGraw lived for many years in Portland, Oregon. She passed away in late 2000 after an illness. She was married to William Corbin McGraw, who died in 1999. They had two children, Peter and Lauren.
