About the Book
The Rundelstone of Oz was first written as part of another book by McGraw. That book was called The Forbidden Fountain of Oz. However, the Rundelstone story was later separated from it.
For a while, the Rundelstone story was not published on its own. It finally appeared in a magazine called Oz-story Magazine. This magazine was published once a year from 1995 to 2000. After that, the story was released as a full hardback book in 2001.
The original plan was for McGraw's daughter, Lauren Lynn McGraw, to draw pictures for The Forbidden Fountain of Oz. But when The Rundelstone of Oz appeared in Oz-story, Eric Shanower created new illustrations for it. The book version from 2001 was published after Eloise Jarvis McGraw had passed away. It included an introduction written by her daughter, Lauren Lynn.
What's the Story About?
This adventure begins with a group called the Troopadours. They are not human performers. Instead, they are living marionettes, like puppets that can move and talk on their own! They travel around entertaining people.
The Evil Magician
The Troopadours arrive at a village called Whitherwood in the Gillikin Country. There, a mean magician named Slyddwyn uses his magic on them. He turns most of the Troopadours into everyday objects. Only Pocotristi Sostenuto, the quietest member of the group, is left free. Slyddwyn makes Poco his servant in his castle.
The Magical Rundelstone
Slyddwyn uses a special rock called the Rundelstone for his magic. This rock is about the size of a fist. It has a "rundel" carved into it. A rundel is a rhyming riddle that also works as a magic spell. These carvings are made in "flarns," which are like ancient runes.
Poco, the puppet hero, must figure out what happened to his friends. He needs to get the Rundelstone and learn how to use its magic.
Heroes to the Rescue
Poco gets help from a young boy named Rolly. Later, famous characters from Oz join them. These include Dorothy Gale and Princess Ozma. With their help, Poco manages to:
- Turn his friends back to normal.
- Defeat the evil magician Slyddwyn.
- Make sure that good wins over evil in the end.
