MyKayla Brooke Skinner Harmer (born December 9, 1996) is an American former gymnast. She won a silver medal in vault at the 2020 Olympic Games. She competed as an individual athlete there. MyKayla was also an alternate for the 2016 Olympic team.

Skinner competed at the 2014 World Championships. There, she helped the U.S. team win a gold medal. She also won a bronze medal for herself on vault. MyKayla earned 11 medals in total at the USA National Championships. She also competed for the University of Utah's gymnastics team. While in college, she became a two-time NCAA champion. She also set new records for the Pac-12.

MyKayla's Gymnastics Journey

Starting Out in Elite Gymnastics (2011–2012)

MyKayla Skinner began her elite gymnastics career in 2011. She became the junior all-around champion at the American Classic. She then joined the junior U.S. national team. This happened after she placed 10th all-around at the National Championships. She also finished second on vault.

In 2012, MyKayla was old enough to compete as a senior gymnast. She joined the U.S. senior national team. She was part of the U.S. team that won at the City of Jesolo Trophy in March. In June, she finished 15th all-around at the U.S. Nationals. She also placed third on vault.

Early Success and World Championships (2013–2015)

In 2013, MyKayla competed at the Fiesta Bowl. She won almost every individual event there. At the P&G Championships in 2013, she placed third on vault and floor. She finished sixth in the all-around competition.

In 2014, Skinner helped the U.S. team win gold at the City of Jesolo Trophy. She won gold medals for vault and floor exercises. She also placed fourth in the all-around. MyKayla then competed at the Pan American Championships in Canada. She helped the U.S. team win first place. She also won the individual all-around competition. She took first place on vault and floor exercise there.

Skinner won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the 2014 World Championships in China. She scored high on vault and floor. In the event finals, MyKayla won a bronze medal on vault. She placed fourth in the floor exercise final.

In 2015, Skinner placed second to Simone Biles at the 2015 AT&T American Cup. At the U.S. Classic in July 2015, she finished seventh in the all-around. She also placed second on vault. MyKayla was later named an alternate for the USA team at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Olympic Alternate and Comeback (2016–2019)

In 2016, Skinner finished 10th all-around at the U.S. National Championships. She won a silver medal on vault and a bronze on floor. This earned her an invitation to the U.S. Olympic Trials. At the Olympic Trials, MyKayla finished fourth all-around. She was then named an alternate for the 2016 Olympic team.

On April 25, 2019, Skinner announced her return to elite gymnastics. She wanted to try for the 2020 Olympics. She competed at the 2019 U.S. Classic. She tied for second on vault with Jade Carey. At the 2019 U.S. National Championships, she tied for ninth. She was added back to the national team. In September, she was named an alternate for the 2019 World Championships.

The Tokyo Olympics Journey (2020–2021)

In March 2020, Skinner competed at the International Gymnix meet in Canada. She placed second in the all-around. She won gold medals in vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise. This helped the U.S.A team win gold.

In January 2021, MyKayla shared that she was in the hospital. She had pneumonia from COVID-19. In March, she rejoined the national team. Skinner competed at the 2021 U.S. Classic in May 2021. She finished first on vault and 10th in the all-around. She was also featured in a docuseries called Golden: The Journey of USA's Elite Gymnasts.

At the National Championships, Skinner won silver on vault. She qualified to compete at the Olympic Trials. MyKayla finished fifth all-around at the Olympic Trials. She was chosen to represent the U.S. at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. She competed as an individual, not as part of the main team.

At the Olympic Games, Skinner performed well in qualifications. She hit all four of her routines. She finished 11th in the all-around and fourth on vault. However, she did not qualify for the finals. This was due to a rule that only two gymnasts per country can advance.

MyKayla took Biles' place in the vault final. Biles had withdrawn due to mental health reasons. Skinner finished second, winning the silver medal. She scored 14.916 for her vaults. On July 3, 2021, Skinner announced she would retire from competitive gymnastics after the Olympics. She returned to the University of Utah to finish her degree.

College Gymnastics Career

In November 2014, Skinner decided to join the University of Utah and the Utah Red Rocks gymnastics program. The Utah coach said MyKayla was "one of the top gymnasts in the world." In April 2015, Skinner decided to wait a year before starting college. She wanted to focus on making the 2016 Olympic team.

First College Season (2016–2017)

Skinner started at the University of Utah in 2016. She competed in the all-around for the NCAA women's gymnastics team. In her first year, she won 43 events. She became the PAC-12 champion in the all-around, vault, and floor exercises. At the NCAA Championships, Skinner finished second in the all-around. She became a national champion on floor exercise. She also placed fifth on vault and eighth on balance beam. The next day, she helped Utah finish fifth in the team competition.

Second College Season (2017–2018)

In the 2018 season, Skinner completed all 54 of her routines without falling. At the PAC-12 Championships, she helped Utah finish second. MyKayla tied for first in the all-around. She also tied for first on floor exercise. At the NCAA Championship, Skinner won silver in the all-around. She tied for first on vault.

Third College Season (2018–2019)

At the PAC-12 Championships, Skinner scored her third perfect 10 on floor exercise. She finished second in the all-around and team finals. She won gold on floor and vault. During the regional finals, Skinner fell on her uneven bars routine. This ended her streak of 161 routines without a fall. At the NCAA Championships, Skinner placed seventh in the all-around. Utah finished fourth in their semifinal and did not move on to the finals.

About MyKayla's Life

MyKayla Skinner was born on December 9, 1996, in Gilbert, Arizona. Her parents are Cris and Kym Skinner. She has three older siblings: Jeremy, Chelsea, and Katie. Her sisters were also gymnasts. MyKayla is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She grew up in Gilbert, Arizona. She has said that Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson was her role model.

Skinner trained at Desert Lights Gymnastics in Arizona. Her head coach was Lisa Spini. She went to Higley High School for her freshman year in 2011. After that, she was homeschooled starting in 2012.

On October 16, 2019, Skinner announced on Instagram that she was engaged to Jonas Harmer. They met while studying at the University of Utah. Skinner and Harmer got married on November 14, 2019. On September 22, 2023, MyKayla and Jonas announced the birth of their daughter, Charlotte Jane, on Instagram.
