MyKayla's Gymnastics Journey

Starting Out: 2011–2012

In 2012, MyKayla became old enough to compete as a senior. She joined the U.S. senior national team. Her team won gold at the City of Jesolo Trophy in March. She competed in the Olympic Trials but was not chosen for the 2012 Olympic team.

Early Success: 2013–2015

In 2013, MyKayla won almost every event at the Fiesta Bowl. At the P&G Championships, she placed third on vault and floor. She finished sixth in the all-around.

In 2014, MyKayla helped the U.S. team win gold at the City of Jesolo Trophy. She also won gold medals for vault and floor exercises. At the Pan American Championships, she helped the U.S. team win gold. She also won the individual all-around title. She placed first on vault and floor exercise.

Olympic Alternate: 2016

At the 2016 U.S. National Championships, MyKayla finished 10th in the all-around. She won a silver medal on vault and a bronze on floor. This earned her an invitation to the U.S. Olympic Trials.

At the Olympic Trials, MyKayla finished fourth in the all-around. She was then named an alternate for the 2016 Olympic team.

Returning to Elite Gymnastics: 2019

MyKayla decided to return to elite gymnastics in 2019. She wanted to try for the 2020 Olympics. She competed at the 2019 U.S. Classic. She tied for second on vault.

She was chosen to represent the U.S. at the Tokyo Olympics as an individual. This meant she would compete on her own, not as part of the main four-person team.

At the Olympic Games, MyKayla performed all four routines in qualifications. She finished 11th in the all-around and fourth on vault. However, she did not qualify for the finals in either event. This was due to a rule that only two gymnasts from each country can compete in a final.

MyKayla took Simone Biles' place in the vault final. Simone Biles withdrew due to mental health reasons. MyKayla won the silver medal, placing second. Her average score for her two vaults was 14.916.
