Jade Ashtyn Carey (born May 27, 2000) is an American artistic gymnast. She is famous for her amazing skills on the vault and floor exercise. Jade won a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in floor exercise. She also won a gold medal with the U.S. women's team, known as the "Golden Girls," at the 2024 Summer Olympics. At the 2024 Olympics, she also earned a bronze medal on vault.

Jade has won many medals at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She is a World champion on vault (2022) and has won team gold medals (2019, 2022). She also has several silver and bronze medals from World Championships. Jade is tied with Aly Raisman as the fifth most decorated U.S. female gymnast ever, with ten Olympic and World Championship medals. She also competes for the Oregon State Beavers in NCAA Gymnastics.

Becoming an Elite Gymnast

Jade started gymnastics at a very young age because her parents owned a gym. She officially began training in 2002.

Starting Elite Gymnastics

In 2016, Jade competed at the Junior Olympics Nationals. She performed a difficult vault called a tucked Kasamatsu. This vault was later named The Carey in the Junior Olympics rulebook. Later that year, she was invited to her first national team camp for elite gymnasts.

In 2017, Jade officially became an elite gymnast. She made her debut at the American Classic. She won first place on vault, floor, and balance beam. At the U.S. Classic, she again placed first on vault and floor. She also performed very difficult skills, like the Amanar vault and a double-twisting double tuck on floor.

At the 2017 U.S. National Gymnastics Championships, Jade won gold on vault and silver on floor. This earned her a spot on the national team for the first time.

World Championships Debut

In September 2017, Jade was chosen to represent the United States at the 2017 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Montreal. She performed well in qualifications, making it to the finals for both vault and floor exercise. In the finals, Jade won silver medals on both vault and floor. This was a fantastic start to her international career.

Pan American Success and Olympic Dream

In 2018, Jade competed in her first all-around competition at the U.S. Classic. She placed first on vault and second on floor. At the 2018 U.S. National Gymnastics Championships, she finished sixth all-around. She also won bronze on vault and silver on floor.

Later that year, Jade was part of the team that won gold at the 2018 Pan American Gymnastics Championships. She also won gold medals on vault and floor exercise at this event.

Jade then decided to try and qualify for the 2020 Olympics as an individual. This meant she would compete in special World Cup events instead of being part of the main U.S. team at the World Championships.

Winning World Cups

In 2019, Jade competed in several World Cup events. She won gold medals on both vault and floor exercise at the Baku World Cup. She also won gold on both events at the Doha World Cup. She was the only gymnast to score over nine on both her vaults in the finals.

At the 2019 U.S. National Gymnastics Championships, Jade won silver medals on both vault and floor. She was then chosen for the U.S. team for the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The team won the gold medal, and Jade also won a silver medal on vault.

In 2020, Jade continued her success at the Melbourne World Cup. She won gold medals on both vault and floor exercise.

Road to the Olympics

In 2021, Jade competed at the U.S. National Championships. She showed off a new, difficult floor skill called the "Biles II" (a triple twisting double salto). She qualified for the Olympic Trials. After the trials, Jade officially earned her spot at the 2020 Summer Olympics through the World Cup series.

Olympic Games 2020 (held in 2021)

At the Tokyo Olympics, Jade performed in the all-around during qualifications. She made it to the finals for both vault and floor exercise.

In the vault final, Jade had a tough moment. She had a misstep and performed a much simpler vault than planned. This caused her to finish in last place. However, she bounced back the very next day!

In the floor exercise final, Jade performed an amazing routine. She won the gold medal, becoming the Olympic champion on floor exercise! She was the third American woman in a row to win this title.

When she returned home, the mayor of Phoenix, Arizona, declared August 17 as "Jade Carey Day."

World Champion and More Medals

In 2022, Jade returned to elite gymnastics at the U.S. National Championships. She won gold on vault and silver on floor. She was also named USA Gymnastics Athlete of the Year.

Later, she competed at the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She helped the U.S. team win another gold medal. Individually, Jade won her first individual World title on vault! She also won a bronze medal on floor exercise. With these medals, she became one of the most decorated American female gymnasts ever.

In 2023, Jade won a bronze medal on vault at the U.S. National Championships. She also won her second Swiss Cup title with her partner Yul Moldauer.

Paris Olympics 2024

Jade continued to compete strongly in 2024. She won gold on vault at the U.S. Classic. At the Olympic Trials, she placed first on vault and second on floor. This earned her a spot on the U.S. team for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Olympic Games 2024

At the Paris Olympics, Jade helped the U.S. team win the gold medal! She contributed a strong vault score to the team's victory. In the individual vault final, Jade won the bronze medal, adding another Olympic medal to her collection.

In 2023, Jade continued to excel. She earned two more perfect 10.0 scores on vault and floor exercise early in the season. On March 4, 2023, she earned her first perfect 10.0 on balance beam. This meant she had scored a perfect 10.0 on all four gymnastics events, a rare achievement called a "gym slam"!

Jade won the all-around title at the Pac-12 Championships for the second year in a row. She was also named Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year again. At the NCAA Championships, she finished as co-runner up on balance beam.

Third College Season (2023–2024)
