Juvenal Juvêncio's Journey in Football
Juvenal Juvêncio played a huge role at the São Paulo Futebol Clube. His first big job there was as the football director from 1984 to 1988. During this time, he made some tough decisions. He decided to let go of some long-time players who were fan favorites. He called this process "reciclagem," meaning "recycling" or renewing the team.
First Term as President
In April 1988, Juvenal Juvêncio was elected president of the club. It was a very close election, which he won by just one vote! His first term as president lasted from 1988 to 1990. During this time, the club won the Paulista Championship in 1989. They also finished as runner-up in the Brazilian Championship that same year.
Returning to Leadership
From 2003 to 2006, Juvêncio returned to the club as the Director of Football. He was responsible for building the team that won two major titles in 2005: the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup. These are two of the most important football competitions in the world!
Three-Time Champion President
Juvenal Juvêncio became club president again in 2006. This was a very successful period for São Paulo FC. Under his leadership, the team won the Brazilian Championship three times in a row, from 2006 to 2008. He was re-elected on April 22, 2008, by a large margin. This new term was for three years, lasting until April 2011.
Juvêncio was known for being very dedicated to the club. People said he "breathed" São Paulo FC 24 hours a day. He sometimes had disagreements with leaders from other clubs. However, he always said he was just defending the interests of São Paulo FC.
Later Years at the Club
In April 2011, Juvenal was elected president for another three-year term. After serving three terms as president, he took on a new role. He became the Director of Football Athletes for the Cotia Formation Center, which helps train young players. However, he was later let go from this position due to disagreements with the new president, Carlos Miguel Aidar.
Remembering Juvenal Juvêncio
For several years, Juvenal Juvêncio battled prostate cancer. This illness weakened his health in the months before his death. He passed away on December 9, 2015, at the age of 81.
His funeral was held at the Cicero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium Morumbi, which is São Paulo FC's home stadium. He was buried on December 10, 2015, at the Cemitério do Morumbi. The city of São Paulo honored him by declaring three days of official mourning.
