Frances Reid (born December 9, 1914 – died February 3, 2010) was an American actress. She was famous for her long career on television, which lasted for almost 70 years! She started acting in 1938 and continued until 2007.
Even though she acted in many different shows and movies, Frances Reid is best known for playing the character Alice Horton on the TV show Days of Our Lives. She was on this show from its very first episode in November 1965 until 2007. She was one of the longest-serving actors in American soap opera history.

Frances Reid grew up in Berkeley, California. She began her acting journey in 1938 with a small part in a movie called Man-Proof.
Starting on Stage and TV
Frances Reid first appeared on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City, in 1939. She played a character named Juliette Lecourtois. Later, in 1946, she acted in a well-known play called Cyrano de Bergerac. She even played the same role again on TV in 1949.
She was also one of the first members of a famous acting group called The Actors Studio, which started in 1947. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she performed in many different plays.
Her Famous TV Roles
From 1954 to 1955, Frances Reid played the main character in a TV show called Portia Faces Life. She also appeared in other popular soap operas. She played Grace Baker on As the World Turns from 1959 to 1962. Then, in 1964, she was Rose Pollack on The Edge of Night.
Her most famous role was playing Alice Horton on Days of Our Lives. She was on the show from its very beginning on November 8, 1965. Her character, Alice, was a kind and loving grandmother figure. Fans especially remember a storyline in 2003-2004 where Alice and other characters seemed to be murdered, which was a big surprise for viewers! Frances Reid's last appearance on the show was in December 2007.
Frances Reid also made guest appearances on other TV shows. She was in two episodes of Perry Mason. She also acted in a movie called Seconds in 1966, alongside actor Rock Hudson. The director of the film, John Frankenheimer, said she was one of his favorite actresses. She also appeared in an episode of the Western show Wagon Train in 1965.

Frances Reid was married to an actor named Philip Bourneuf. They got married on June 27, 1940, and later divorced in 1973.

Frances Reid passed away on February 3, 2010, in Beverly Hills, California. She was 95 years old.

Frances Reid received many awards for her acting. She was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award twice, in 1979 and 1987. The Daytime Emmy Awards celebrate excellence in daytime television. In 2004, she received a special Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmys, which honored her long and successful career.
She also won the Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Actress in a Mature Role four times: in 1978, 1979, 1984, and 1985. In 2003, she was added to the Television Academy's archives, which keeps records of important people in television history.
