Major Events of 1508
Conflicts and Alliances
In February 1508, Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, who was a powerful ruler, launched an attack on the city-state of Venice. Venice was a very rich and important trading center at the time.
However, Maximilian's attack did not go as planned. On June 6, Venetian forces defeated him in a region called Friulia. This loss forced Maximilian to sign a peace agreement. He agreed to a three-year truce and had to give up some of his lands to Venice.
Later that year, on December 10, a very important agreement was made. It was called the League of Cambrai. This league was a powerful alliance formed against Venice. The main leaders who joined this alliance were:
- Pope Julius II, the head of the Catholic Church
- Louis XII of France, the King of France
- Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, who had just been defeated by Venice
- Ferdinand II of Aragon, the King of Aragon in Spain
This alliance showed how many European powers wanted to reduce Venice's influence.
Art and New Beginnings
December 1508 marked the start of an incredible artistic project. The famous Italian artist Michelangelo Buonarroti began painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. This chapel is located in the Vatican City, a very important place for the Catholic Church. Michelangelo's work on the ceiling would become one of the most famous artworks in history. It took him several years to complete this masterpiece.
Leadership in Ethiopia
In Ethiopia, a new emperor came to power in 1508. His name was Lebna Dengel. He took over from his father, Na'od. Because Lebna Dengel was very young when he became emperor, his grandmother, Eleni, stepped in to help. She acted as his regent, which means she governed the country until he was old enough to rule on his own.
