The year 1505 was a time of important changes and discoveries around the world. New rulers took power, countries made new laws, and explorers reached new lands.

Important Events of 1505

Royal Marriages and Politics

  • On March 5, the Pope gave special permission for Prince Henry to marry Catherine of Aragon. Henry later became King Henry VIII of England.
  • Later, on June 27, Prince Henry broke off his promise to marry Catherine. His father, King Henry VII, told him to do this.
  • In Poland, King Alexander signed a new law called "Nihil novi". This law meant that the king could not make new laws without the agreement of the nobles. This made Poland a "Nobles' Democracy," where nobles had a lot of power.
  • Also in Poland, a new law was made that stopped peasants from leaving their lands. This started a system called serfdom, where peasants were tied to the land they worked.
