Royal Marriages and Politics

On March 5, the Pope gave special permission for Prince Henry to marry Catherine of Aragon. Henry later became King Henry VIII of England.
Later, on June 27, Prince Henry broke off his promise to marry Catherine. His father, King Henry VII, told him to do this.
In Poland, King Alexander signed a new law called "Nihil novi". This law meant that the king could not make new laws without the agreement of the nobles. This made Poland a "Nobles' Democracy," where nobles had a lot of power.
Also in Poland, a new law was made that stopped peasants from leaving their lands. This started a system called serfdom, where peasants were tied to the land they worked.

New Leaders and Discoveries

Vasili III became the new Grand Prince of Muscovy (which later became Russia). He took over after his father, Ivan III, passed away.
Portuguese explorers, led by Dom Lourenço d'Almeida, arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They sent messengers to the King of Kotte.
Arabs reached the Comoros islands, located off the coast of Africa.
Judah Abravanel became the personal doctor for the viceroy of Naples. A viceroy was a ruler who governed a country or province as the representative of a king or queen.
