Important Events of 1505
Royal Marriages and Politics
- On March 5, the Pope gave special permission for Prince Henry to marry Catherine of Aragon. Henry later became King Henry VIII of England.
- Later, on June 27, Prince Henry broke off his promise to marry Catherine. His father, King Henry VII, told him to do this.
- In Poland, King Alexander signed a new law called "Nihil novi". This law meant that the king could not make new laws without the agreement of the nobles. This made Poland a "Nobles' Democracy," where nobles had a lot of power.
- Also in Poland, a new law was made that stopped peasants from leaving their lands. This started a system called serfdom, where peasants were tied to the land they worked.
New Leaders and Discoveries
- Vasili III became the new Grand Prince of Muscovy (which later became Russia). He took over after his father, Ivan III, passed away.
- Portuguese explorers, led by Dom Lourenço d'Almeida, arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They sent messengers to the King of Kotte.
- Arabs reached the Comoros islands, located off the coast of Africa.
- Judah Abravanel became the personal doctor for the viceroy of Naples. A viceroy was a ruler who governed a country or province as the representative of a king or queen.
Education and Institutions
- Christ's College, a part of the University of Cambridge, was founded in England.
