Julio Terrazas Sandoval (born March 7, 1936 – died December 9, 2015) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Cardinal and served as the Archbishop of Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia. He was known for his work and leadership in the church.

Life and Church Service
Julio Terrazas Sandoval was born in Vallegrande, Bolivia. He became a priest in 1962. He studied social ministry at EMACAS University in France.
Early Roles in the Church
After his studies, he returned to Bolivia. He became the leader of the Redemptorist community in Vallegrande. In 1978, he was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of La Paz. This meant he helped the main bishop.
Later, in 1982, he moved to the Diocese of Oruro to serve as its bishop. He also led the Episcopal Commission for ordinary people, youth, and vocations. He was elected President of the Bolivian Episcopal Conference four times. This is a group of bishops who work together in Bolivia.
Becoming a Cardinal
In 1991, Julio Terrazas Sandoval was appointed Archbishop of Santa Cruz. This was a very important role. On February 21, 2001, Pope John Paul II made him a Cardinal. A Cardinal is a high-ranking official in the Catholic Church, chosen by the Pope.
Papal Conclaves
As a Cardinal, he had the important job of helping to choose a new Pope. He was one of the Cardinals who voted in the 2005 papal conclave. In this meeting, Pope Benedict XVI was chosen as the new Pope.
He also participated in the 2013 papal conclave. During this meeting, Pope Francis was chosen as the new leader of the Catholic Church.
Retirement and Passing
On May 25, 2013, Pope Francis accepted Cardinal Terrazas Sandoval's resignation. Bishops usually offer to resign when they turn 75. He was succeeded by Sergio Alfredo Gualberti Calandrina, who had been working with him.
Cardinal Julio Terrazas Sandoval passed away on December 9, 2015, at the age of 79. He had been dealing with several health issues.
