Early Life and Background
Paul Landers was born in East Berlin, which was then part of East Germany. His parents, Anton and Erika Hiersche, met while studying in Halle (Saale). His mother came from a town now in Poland, and his father was from a town now in the Czech Republic. As a young child, Landers lived for a short time in Moscow, Russia. Music Career Beginnings
Joining Feeling B
In 1983, when he was 18 years old, Paul Landers joined an East German punk band called Feeling B. The band was started by singer Aljoscha Rompe and drummer Alexander Kriening. Later, a 16-year-old musician named Christian "Flake" Lorenz joined the band. Flake played the organ and used it to create bass sounds for the band. Feeling B also had different drummers over time, including Christoph Schneider, who would later join Rammstein. Landers also played in other bands, such as Die Firma and Die Magdalene Keibel Combo.
Meeting Future Bandmates
In the late 1980s, Landers met Till Lindemann. They met during a documentary about youth music in East Germany. He also met Richard Kruspe, who was a friend of Lindemann. Landers later played guitar in a band with Lindemann and Kruspe called First Arsch. This band released their only album, Saddle Up, in 1992.
Forming Rammstein
In 1993, Till Lindemann, Richard Kruspe, Christoph Schneider, and bassist Oliver Riedel formed a new band. They called themselves Templeprayers at first. In 1994, they won a music contest in Berlin. This win allowed them to record a professional four-song demo. Soon after, Paul Landers and Flake joined the band. With the new members, the band changed its name to Rammstein.
Personal Life
Paul Landers married his first wife, Nikki Landers, in 1984 when he was 20. He decided to take his wife's last name, Landers. He also switched his middle name and first name around, so his full name became Paul Landers. He has two children, a son and a daughter.
