Early Life and Music Beginnings
Christoph Schneider was born in Pankow, a part of East Berlin. His parents were both involved in music. His father was an opera director, and his mother was a music teacher. Christoph also has a younger sister. When he was young, he played handball as a goalkeeper for four years.
His parents wanted him to learn an instrument, so he went to a special music school. He could choose between the trumpet, clarinet, or trombone. He picked the trumpet first because it seemed the easiest. Christoph said he was very good at the trumpet and joined an orchestra, playing concerts after only a year.
While in the orchestra, he became very interested in drums. He loved how big the drum section was and all the equipment. He even started building his own drum kit using tin cans and buckets! At first, his parents weren't sure about him playing drums. But when he bought his first real drum kit at age 14, they let him practice and take lessons.
When he was 16, Schneider left school. He then worked as a radio and telecommunications technician. In 1984, he served in the East German Army. He is the only member of Rammstein who has been in the military.
Music Career and Rammstein
In 1985, Christoph Schneider decided to focus on music. He quit his job and tried to study music, but he didn't pass the entrance test because he wasn't skilled enough in other musical areas besides drumming. After that, he joined bands called Keine Ahnung and Frechheit. In the late 1980s, he joined Die Firma, which was an underground punk band. In 1990, he also became a member of the punk band Feeling B.
In 1993, Schneider teamed up with Richard Kruspe and Oliver Riedel to start a new music project called Tempelprayers. Later, Till Lindemann joined them. In 1994, their band won a contest in Berlin, which gave them a chance to record music in a professional studio. That same year, two of Schneider's old bandmates from Feeling B, Paul Landers and Christian Lorenz, joined the group. That's when the band changed its name to Rammstein.
About Christoph Schneider
Christoph Schneider's nickname is "Doom." He got this name from the popular video game. He needed a unique name for a German copyright agency because there were many other Christoph Schneiders already registered. Paul Landers suggested "Doom" because they both liked the game. In an interview in 2010, Schneider mentioned that if he had known the name would be on every album he played on, he might have chosen a different one!
Schneider has been married twice and has three children with his second wife.
He enjoys rock bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC. He looks up to drummers such as Ian Paice, Phil Rudd, Vinnie Paul, and Chad Smith as his main drumming inspirations.
Christoph Schneider is also a big fan of the Bundesliga football club Union Berlin.
Equipment He Uses
Christoph Schneider uses and supports several brands for his drumming gear. He uses Sabian cymbals, DW drum kits, pedals, and hardware. He also uses Vic Firth drumsticks and Remo drumheads. In the past, he used drums from Sonor and Tama, and cymbals from Meinl.
