Early Life and Music Beginnings
Schneider was born in Pankow, a part of East Berlin. His parents were both involved in music. His father was an opera director, and his mother was a music teacher. Christoph also has a younger sister.
When he was younger, he played handball as a goalkeeper for four years. His parents wanted him to learn an instrument. He went to a special music school linked to a youth orchestra. He could choose between trumpet, clarinet, or trombone. He picked the trumpet first because it seemed the easiest.
Schneider became a talented trumpeter quickly. After just one year, he joined the orchestra and started playing concerts. While in the orchestra, he became very interested in drums. He loved how big and cool the drum section looked. He even started building his own drum kit using tin cans and buckets!
His parents were not sure about him playing drums at first. But when he bought his first drum kit at age 14, they let him practice and take lessons.
Schneider finished high school at 16. He then worked as a radio and telecommunications technician. In 1984, he served in the East German Army. He is the only member of Rammstein who served in the military.
Music Career and Rammstein
In 1985, Schneider left his technician job to focus on music. He tried to study music but did not pass the entrance test. This was because he lacked other musical skills besides drumming. After that, Schneider joined bands called Keine Ahnung and Frechheit. In the late 1980s, he joined Die Firma, an underground punk band. In 1990, he also became a member of the punk band Feeling B.
In 1993, Schneider teamed up with Richard Kruspe and Oliver Riedel. They started a new music project called Tempelprayers. Later, Till Lindemann joined their band. In 1994, they entered a music contest in Berlin and won a chance to record in a professional studio. That same year, Paul Landers and Christian Lorenz, who were also in Feeling B with Schneider, joined the band. At this point, the band changed its name to Rammstein.
Personal Interests
Christoph Schneider's nickname is "Doom." This name comes from the popular video game. Schneider needed a unique name for a German copyright agency. There were too many other Christoph Schneiders already registered. Paul Landers suggested "Doom" because they both liked the game. Schneider later said that if he had known the name would be on every record, he might have chosen a different one!
Schneider has been married twice. He was married to Regina Gizatulina from 2005 to 2009. In 2014, he married his second wife, Ulrike Schmid. Christoph and Ulrike have three children together.
He enjoys listening to rock bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC. He looks up to drummers such as Ian Paice, Phil Rudd, Vinnie Paul, and Chad Smith.
Schneider is also a big fan of the Bundesliga football club Union Berlin.
