Christian "Flake" Lorenz (born 16 November 1966) is a German musician. He is best known as the keyboard player for the band Rammstein. He is also a main composer for the band, working with guitarist Richard Kruspe. Before Rammstein, Flake was a member of the East German punk band Feeling B. He has also released a solo album called Flake feiert Weihnachten, which features covers of popular Christmas songs.

Music Career

Playing in Feeling B

In 1983, when he was 16 years old, Flake Lorenz started playing in a band called Feeling B. He played with Paul Landers and Aljoscha Rompe, a singer from Switzerland who lived in East Berlin. Flake was part of this band for about ten years. Feeling B was known for its punk rock style and was popular in the underground music scene.

Flake and Paul Landers lived together in an apartment during the early years of the band. The group eventually stopped playing together in the mid-1990s. However, the band members would sometimes reunite for special concerts at punk festivals. This continued until Aljoscha Rompe passed away in November 2000.

Joining Rammstein

In 1994, a new band was forming with Till Lindemann, Richard Kruspe, Oliver Riedel, and Christoph Schneider. They won a music contest in Berlin, which helped them record their first songs. Paul Landers then joined the band, and soon after, Flake Lorenz joined too. At first, Flake was not sure about joining Rammstein. He thought their music might be too serious. But he eventually agreed, and the band started working on their first album, called Herzeleid (which means Heartache).

Flake is known for his energetic performances on stage. For many years, he would "surf" over the audience in an inflatable rubber boat during the song "Seemann" ("Seaman"). In 2002, Oliver Riedel took over this part of the show. Flake said he was getting hurt too often during the performance. However, Flake returned to riding the boat for Rammstein's 2009 tour during the song "Haifisch" ("Shark").

During a concert in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 30 July 2005, Till Lindemann got a knee injury. This happened when Flake was riding a Segway during the song "Amerika" ("America"). Because of this, some concerts that were planned in Asia had to be canceled. In 2005, Flake also got mumps, which led to more canceled concerts in South America.

In January 2012, Flake and Till Lindemann were interviewed for a TV show called Metal Evolution. They talked about a music style known as shock rock.

About Flake

Personal Life

Flake Lorenz has five children. On 12 September 2008, he married an artist named Jenny Rosemeyer. Jenny provided the whistling sound for Rammstein's song "Roter Sand." Flake also has an older brother.

Outside of music, Flake enjoys painting as a hobby. He also likes classic cars. He owns a Mercedes-Benz and is involved in a business that rents out vintage cars.

Nicknames

Flake Lorenz is often called "Flake" or "Doktor." The name "Flake" comes from a Viking village in the children's book series about Vicke Viking. He got the nickname "Doktor" because he once wanted to become a surgeon. However, he was not able to study to become one. In an interview in 2000, he said that "Flake" is his actual name.

Thoughts on Life

Flake has shared some of his thoughts on different topics. He has said that he does not like religions that become very strict. He also believes that being too extreme about religion can be dangerous.

In an interview in 2001, Flake mentioned that he prefers playing concerts in the USA over Germany. He said that people in America are more relaxed about music. He also really liked the city of Seattle when touring there.

On 5 October 2005, Flake appeared on a German TV show. He was asked about the reunification of Germany, which was when East and West Germany became one country again. He said he sometimes misses how things were before. He felt that life was simpler in East Germany. For example, he said, "You went into a bar, ordered a beer, and you got a beer!... They didn't ask if you wanted... with a head or without a head, foam top or bottom... It really gets on my nerves having all of these choices I really don't want." In 2014, Flake wrote an essay where he said he still misses the GDR (East Germany) even today.

In a 2019 interview, Flake remembered life in East Germany as being "free of trouble and pressure." He also said that everyone had enough money to live comfortably.
