Music Career
Feeling B
In 1983, when he was 16 years old, Flake started playing in a band called Feeling B. He played with future Rammstein bandmate Paul Landers and a Swiss singer named Aljoscha Rompe. Flake was part of this underground punk band for about ten years.
In the early days, Flake and Paul Landers lived in the same apartment. When they weren't playing music, they made jackets from bed sheets and sold them. This helped them make a living without having a normal job.
The band stopped playing together in the mid-1990s. They would sometimes reunite for special concerts at punk festivals. This ended after Rompe passed away in November 2000.
Rammstein
In 1994, a new band was forming. The members were Till Lindemann, Richard Kruspe, Oliver Riedel, and Christoph Schneider. They won a music contest in Berlin which allowed them to record a professional demo.
Paul Landers joined them, and then they asked Flake to join. At first, Flake said no. He thought the band's music would be too boring. His friends had to keep asking him, but he finally agreed. The group then started working on their first album, Herzeleid.
Famous On-Stage Moments
Flake is known for his fun and interesting performances during Rammstein concerts.
Until 2002, during the song "Seemann", Flake would "surf" over the audience in a large, inflatable boat. His bandmate Oliver Riedel took over this role in 2002. Flake said he stopped because he was getting injured too often. He returned to riding the boat during the band's 2009 tour for the song "Haifisch" ("Shark").
During a concert in Sweden in 2005, singer Till Lindemann hurt his knee. This happened when Flake accidentally ran into him with the Segway he rides during the song "Amerika". Because of this injury, the band had to cancel some of their concerts in Asia.
Also in 2005, Flake got sick with the mumps. This caused the band to cancel concerts in South America.
Personal Life
Flake has five children. In 2008, he married artist Jenny Rosemeyer. She even provided the whistling for the Rammstein song "Roter Sand".
Flake has a brother who is four years older than him. In his free time, Flake is a painter and loves classic cars. He owns a vintage Mercedes and is involved in a business that rents out old cars.
How He Got His Nicknames
Flake has two common nicknames: "Flake" and "Doktor" (which is German for Doctor).
The name "Flake" comes from a character in a series of children's books about Vikings. He has said in an interview that "Flake" is his real name.
The nickname "Doktor" started because he once wanted to be a surgeon. He couldn't study to become one because he refused to join the military in East Germany, which was required at the time.
Views and Opinions
Flake grew up in East Germany, also known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR). This was a country that existed from 1949 to 1990. It was separated from West Germany by the Berlin Wall.
When asked about Germany being reunified into one country, Flake said he sometimes misses the simplicity of the old days in East Germany. He said, "You went into a bar, ordered a beer, and you got a beer! ... It really gets on my nerves having all of these choices I really don't want."
In 2019, he described his life in East Germany as "free of trouble and pressure, we all had enough money to live." His bandmate Till Lindemann once said, "Flake is still a citizen of the GDR, and he will die a citizen of the GDR."
