Till Lindemann (born 4 January 1963) is a German singer and songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer and lyric writer for the band Rammstein. He also has his own music project called Lindemann. Rammstein has sold more than 25 million albums around the world. Many of their albums have sold so well that they reached "platinum" status. Lindemann is also known as one of the "50 Greatest Metal Frontmen of All Time" by Roadrunner Records. Besides music, he has acted in a few movies and published three books of poetry.

Early Life and Childhood

Till Lindemann was born on January 4, 1963, in Leipzig, which was then part of East Germany. His mother, Brigitte Hildegard "Gitta" Lindemann, was a journalist. His father, Werner Lindemann, was a poet. They met in 1959. Till grew up in Wendisch-Rambow with his younger sister, Saskia.

When he was 11, Lindemann went to a special sports school in Rostock. He also attended a boarding school from 1977 to 1980. His parents separated in 1975 and later divorced. He lived with his father for a short time.

In 1978, Lindemann competed in the European Junior Swimming Championships in Florence. He finished 11th in the 1500-meter freestyle and 7th in the 400-meter freestyle. He was considered for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, but he had to stop swimming because of an injury. Lindemann later said he never really liked the sports school because it was very hard. After swimming, he worked as a carpenter, a gallery helper, and a basket weaver. His mother wrote a letter about him in 2009 called Mein Sohn, der Frontmann von Rammstein (My son, the frontman of Rammstein). The first album he ever owned was Stormbringer by Deep Purple.

Music Career

Lindemann started his music journey in 1986. He played drums for an experimental rock band called First Arsch in Schwerin. They released an album called Saddle Up in 1992. He also played drums for one song with a punk band called Feeling B in 1989. This band included future Rammstein members Paul Landers, Christoph Schneider, and Christian "Flake" Lorenz.

In the 1990s, Lindemann began writing song lyrics. In 1994, his band won a contest in Berlin. This allowed them to record a four-song demo professionally. The band decided to name themselves Rammstein after the Ramstein air show disaster. Lindemann said they wanted to create a musical tribute to the event.

Lindemann later moved to Berlin. In 1996, there was an accident with pyrotechnics (fire effects) during a concert. Part of the stage caught fire. After this, Lindemann got his own certification in pyrotechnics. This helped the band use fire effects more safely in their shows.

By 2005, five of Rammstein's albums had received platinum awards. The band also won the "World Sales Awards" for selling over 10 million copies worldwide.

Lindemann is known for a special stage move called "The Till Hammer." He bends his knees, hits his thigh with his fist, and moves his head from side to side. Sometimes, the band's keyboardist, Flake, will copy this move on stage. Unlike many lead singers, Lindemann has said he doesn't like being watched while performing. He often wears sunglasses to avoid seeing the audience.

The band's famous pyrotechnics are not just for show. Lindemann says they also help take the audience's attention away from him. He often looks directly at the mixing booth in the middle of the crowd. In 2011, Roadrunner Records named Lindemann number 50 on their list of the 50 greatest metal frontmen of all time.

Other Music Projects

On his 52nd birthday, January 4, 2015, it was announced that Lindemann would start a new project. This project was with Peter Tägtgren and was also named Lindemann. Their first album, Skills in Pills, came out in June 2015. Their second album, F&M, was released in November 2019.

In 2021, Lindemann sang a Soviet war song called Lubimy Gorod (Beloved Town) in Russian. This song was for the Russian movie V2. Escape from Hell. His music video for ''Frau & Mann'' was nominated for an award in 2020. In 2021, his music video for ''Alle Tage ist kein Sonntag'' also received a nomination.

In November 2002, Lindemann's first poetry book, Messer (Knife), was published. It contained 54 poems. In 2013, his second poetry book, In stillen Nächten (In Quiet Nights), was released. He said that most of his poems could have been written hundreds of years ago. In 2018, he went on a book signing tour in Russia for Messer, which had been translated into Russian.

Lindemann has also appeared in a few films. Two songs from Rammstein's album Herzeleid were used in the 1997 film Lost Highway. Lindemann and his bandmate Christoph Schneider played musicians in the 1999 film Pola X. He played a character named Viktor in the children's comedy film Amundsen der Pinguin (2003). He also appeared as an animal rights activist in the 2004 film Vinzent. Lindemann and the rest of Rammstein also appeared in the 2002 movie xXx, performing their song "Feuer frei!"

Musical Style

Lindemann has a deep, powerful singing voice, known as a dramatic baritone. He often sings with a strong, forceful sound and uses a rolling "R" sound. The New York Times described his voice as "low, powerful... untrained but electrifying."

Lindemann describes his own lyrics as "love songs." Some of his songs include references to older literature. For example, "Dalai Lama" from the album Reise, Reise is based on Goethe's poem "Der Erlkönig". Other songs like "Rosenrot" and "Feuer und Wasser" also use ideas from famous poems. "Mein Herz brennt" uses words from a German children's TV show called Das Sandmännchen.

He also uses ideas from modern literature. The song title "Non, je ne regrette rien" was used in the chorus of "Frühling in Paris." The lyrics of "Links 2-3-4" are based on a song by Bertolt Brecht. Lindemann says these lyrics show the band's political views, placing them on the left. He also used parts of another Brecht song, "Mack the Knife", for the chorus of "Haifisch".

The song "Cowboy" criticizes the idea of overly tough American cowboys. Lindemann points out that cowboys were not always heroes and often treated Native Americans badly.

Personal Life

Till Lindemann has four children. His oldest daughter, Nele, was born in 1985. He raised her as a single father for her first seven years. He also has a grandson through Nele.

Lindemann is an atheist. In a 2011 interview, he said he still feels connected to the traditions of East Germany. He dislikes how traditions are disappearing and believes there is "no longer any authenticity." He has also said he "hates noise" and often spends time in a quiet village in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

In 2014, Lindemann showed two sculptures and his original poem writings from his book In stillen Nächten at a gallery in Dresden. He also wrote some lyrics for German singer Roland Kaiser's album Soul Tracks in 2014.
