Ian Anderson Paice (born 29 June 1948) is an English musician. He is famous as the drummer for the rock band Deep Purple. He is the only member of Deep Purple who has been in every version of the band since it started in 1968. He has played on all their albums and at every live show. In 2016, he was added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple.

Deep Purple took a break for eight years, from 1976 to 1984. During this time, Ian Paice played in two other bands that also included other Deep Purple members. He was with Paice Ashton Lord from 1976 to 1978, and then with Whitesnake from 1979 to 1982. After that, he was the drummer for Gary Moore from 1982 until Deep Purple got back together in 1984. He has also played drums for other famous artists like George Harrison and Paul McCartney.

Ian Paice's Early Life

Ian Paice was born in Nottingham, England. His father worked for the government. Ian spent his early childhood in Germany before moving back to England, near Oxford. He got his first drum kit when he was 15 years old. He started his music career in the early 1960s, playing drums in his father's dance band. His first band was called Georgie & the Rave-Ons. They later changed their name to the Shindigs and released their first song when Ian was 17.

In 1966, Paice joined a band called MI5, which soon became the Maze. This band mostly played in clubs and released several songs, mainly recorded in Italy and France.

Joining Deep Purple

The Maze had a singer named Rod Evans. In March 1968, Rod Evans and Ian Paice helped form the first version of Deep Purple. Rod Evans had answered an advertisement for a lead singer for Deep Purple. He brought Ian Paice along to his audition. Deep Purple's first choice for a drummer didn't like the band's music style. So, the group quickly set up an audition for Ian Paice. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was very keen on him. Years later, Blackmore said he had been looking for Ian Paice for about a year after seeing him play in Hamburg. He called Paice an "incredible drummer" and the "motor of the band." Ian Paice is the only original member still in Deep Purple today.

Playing with Whitesnake

Deep Purple broke up in 1976 and then got back together in 1984. During the time they were apart, Ian Paice started a new band called Paice Ashton Lord in 1976. This band included singer/pianist Tony Ashton, Deep Purple organist Jon Lord, guitarist Bernie Marsden, and bassist Paul Martinez. They recorded one album called Malice in Wonderland and played only five live shows. The band stopped in 1977 while recording their second album. They broke up because Tony Ashton preferred playing in smaller clubs.

In August 1979, David Coverdale asked Ian Paice to join Whitesnake for their tour in Japan. He stayed with Whitesnake for almost three years. He played on their albums Ready an' Willing (1980), Live...in the Heart of the City (1980), Come an' Get It (1981), and Saints & Sinners (1982). During this time, Whitesnake had three members from earlier Deep Purple bands: David Coverdale, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. Ian Paice left Whitesnake in January 1982 due to musical disagreements with David Coverdale.

Time with Gary Moore Band

In 1982, Ian Paice joined Gary Moore to work on an album that became Corridors of Power. Gary Moore's manager suggested that Moore and Paice form a band together under Moore's name. This way, Moore's management would handle the business side, and Paice would have a good share in the band. This partnership was successful. They released a few albums and went on many tours. Ian Paice left Gary Moore's band in April 1984 when Deep Purple reunited. He has been with Deep Purple ever since.

Other Music Projects

Ian Paice has played drums for many other artists. In 1973, he played on the Velvet Underground's last album, Squeeze. He also joined jazz musician Eddie Harris for some recordings in London in 1973. He played on two songs, "He's Island Man" and "I've Tried Everything," with other famous musicians like Jeff Beck and Steve Winwood.

In 1983, Paice was part of a special recording where the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra played songs by the band The Police. He played on several tracks for this album, Arrested – The Music of Police.

In July 1989, Ian Paice recorded three songs with George Harrison (from The Beatles) at Friar Park. These songs, "Cheer Down," "Cockamamie Business," and "Poor Little Girl," were released on a compilation album.

In March 1999, Paice joined Paul McCartney (also from The Beatles) at Abbey Road Studios to record the album Run Devil Run. Other musicians on the album included David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. Ian Paice also played with Paul McCartney at a few live shows, including one at the famous Cavern Club.

In 2001, Paice played on Jim Capaldi's album Living on the Outside. He played on a rock-and-roll song called "Anna Julia," which also featured George Harrison. Ian Paice has also often worked with drummer Pete York, playing drum shows together. He has also performed with Italian guitarist Tolo Marton and the Moonstone Project band.

In 2007, Paice gave a drum clinic at the University of Glamorgan in Wales. He said that the university's music school would be a great place for young musicians to learn. In 2008, he played at the ChildLine Rocks charity concert in London with former Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes. He also took part in the "Rock Legends Adventure" concert in Germany, playing songs by The Kinks, The Beatles, and Deep Purple.

Ian Paice's Personal Life

Ian Paice is married and has three children named James, Emmy, and Calli. His wife, Jacky, is the twin sister of Jon Lord's late wife, Vicky.

There was a rumor that Ian Paice only had one lung. Actually, he is only missing a small part of the lower section of his left lung. This happened because he had pneumonia when he was six years old, which turned into tuberculosis.

He is almost always seen wearing glasses with blue, green, or purple tinted lenses. Ian Paice supports the England rugby team. His son James used to play rugby.

Ian Paice's Health

On June 14, 2016, Ian Paice had a mini-stroke. This caused Deep Purple to cancel two concerts in Sweden. After the incident, he said there was "no serious or permanent damage." He expected to return to playing in July. He also mentioned that these were the first Deep Purple concerts he had ever had to cancel since he helped start the band in 1968. He returned to the stage with Deep Purple in Gothenburg on July 1, playing a full show.

Today, Ian Paice mainly uses Pearl drum kits for his performances. He uses Paiste cymbals, Remo drumheads, and Pro-Mark drumsticks. In the 1970s and early 1980s, he used Ludwig drum kits with very large drums. He switched to Pearl in 1982 because he felt Ludwig's drum development had slowed down, and Pearl offered him a better deal. He prefers to use a single bass drum setup for both live shows and studio recordings. Pearl Drums even makes a special snare drum with his signature.

He has also released a solo DVD that is helpful for drummers and music fans.

Ian Paice's Drumming Style

Ian Paice's early drumming heroes included jazz and rock drummers like Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Ringo Starr. Later, he was inspired by drummers like Ginger Baker.

He is mostly left-handed and sets up his drum kit for a left-handed player. He uses a matched-grip style when holding his drumsticks. He is well known for his incredibly fast and smooth single and double-stroke rolls. He is also known for his speed with a single bass pedal. He once used a double-bass drum setup for the song "Fireball" and sometimes played it live. He is also famous for perfecting the one-handed drum roll.

Many famous rock drummers say Ian Paice has influenced their playing. These include Dave Grohl and Simon Phillips.

Awards and Recognition
