Ian Paice's Early Life and Music
Starting with Drums
Ian Paice was born in Nottingham, England. When he was young, his family moved south. He got his first drum kit when he was 15 years old. He started playing drums professionally in the early 1960s. His first band was called Georgie & the Rave-Ons. They later changed their name to the Shindigs. At just 17, Ian Paice played on their first single.
In 1966, Paice joined a band called the MI5. This band soon changed its name to the Maze. The Maze was mostly a club band. They recorded several songs, mainly in Italy and France.
Forming Deep Purple
The Maze had a singer named Rod Evans. In March 1968, Rod Evans and Ian Paice helped form the first version of Deep Purple. Rod Evans had answered an advertisement for a lead singer. He brought Ian Paice along to his audition.
Deep Purple's first choice for a drummer didn't like the band's music style. So, they quickly set up an audition for Paice. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was very keen on him. Blackmore later said he had been looking for Ian Paice for about a year after seeing him play in Hamburg. He called Paice "an incredible drummer" and "the motor of the band." Ian Paice is the only original Deep Purple member still in the band today.
Ian Paice's Other Bands
Playing with Whitesnake
Deep Purple broke up in 1976. They later got back together in 1984. During the time Deep Purple was split up, Paice started a new band called Paice Ashton Lord in 1976. This band included singer/pianist Tony Ashton and Deep Purple's organ player Jon Lord. They recorded one album and played only five live shows. The band stopped in 1977 and later broke up.
In 1979, David Coverdale asked Paice to join his band, Whitesnake. Paice stayed with Whitesnake for almost three years. He played on several Whitesnake albums, including Ready an' Willing (1980) and Come an' Get It (1981). During this time, three members from different Deep Purple lineups were in Whitesnake: David Coverdale, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. Ian Paice left Whitesnake in 1982 due to musical differences.
Joining the Gary Moore Band
In 1982, Paice joined guitarist Gary Moore to record an album called Corridors of Power. Gary Moore's manager suggested they form a band together under Moore's name. This partnership was very successful. They made a few albums and went on many tours. Ian Paice left Gary Moore's band in April 1984. This was because Deep Purple was getting back together, and he rejoined them. He has been with Deep Purple ever since.
