Early Life and Music
Robert Plant was born in West Bromwich, England. As a boy, he loved listening to rock and roll and blues music. He especially admired singers like Elvis Presley and Robert Johnson. He wanted to be a singer from a young age.
When he was a teenager, he left school to follow his dream. He joined several local bands and started to become known for his amazing voice. This is how he met the drummer John Bonham, who would later join him in Led Zeppelin.
The Led Zeppelin Years (1968–1980)
In 1968, guitarist Jimmy Page was looking for a singer for his new band. He saw Plant perform and was very impressed. Page asked Plant to join his band, which was first called the "New Yardbirds." They soon changed their name to Led Zeppelin.
Led Zeppelin quickly became one of the biggest bands in the world. They released their first album in 1969. Their music was a mix of hard rock, blues, and folk music. Many people say they helped create the heavy metal genre.
Writing and Performing
Plant wrote the lyrics for many of Led Zeppelin's most famous songs. He was inspired by mythology, history, and books. For example, some songs mention characters and places from J. R. R. Tolkien's books, like The Lord of the Rings. Songs like "Immigrant Song" and "The Battle of Evermore" show his interest in these fantasy worlds.
On stage, Plant was a very energetic performer. With his long blond hair and powerful voice, he became a classic example of a "rock god." He danced and moved around the stage, making the band's live shows very exciting. He became as famous as other frontmen of the time, like Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.
Difficult Times
The band faced some hard times. In 1975, Plant and his wife were in a serious car accident. This delayed the recording of their album Presence.
Then, in 1977, Plant's five-year-old son, Karac, passed away from an illness. Plant was very sad and thought about quitting music. The band stopped touring for a while. Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 after their drummer, John Bonham, died.
A Successful Solo Career
After Led Zeppelin ended, Plant decided to continue making music. He started a solo career in 1982 with the album Pictures at Eleven. He had many hit songs, including "Big Log" and "Tall Cool One".
He did not want to only be known as "the singer from Led Zeppelin." For a long time, he did not perform Led Zeppelin songs in his concerts. He wanted to create his own new music and style.
Working with Other Musicians
Over the years, Plant has worked with many different artists.
Page and Plant
In the 1990s, he teamed up with his old bandmate Jimmy Page. They formed a group called Page and Plant. They released an album called No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded. It featured new versions of Led Zeppelin songs with different instruments, like strings and Egyptian drums. They toured the world and were very successful.
Alison Krauss
In 2007, Plant made an album with American bluegrass singer Alison Krauss. The album, called Raising Sand, was a huge success. It won five Grammy Awards, including the award for Album of the Year in 2009. They released a second album together, Raise the Roof, in 2021.
Band of Joy and Other Projects
In 2010, Plant formed a new group called Band of Joy. This was the same name as one of his first bands from the 1960s. They released an album and toured together.
Later, he formed another band called the Sensational Space Shifters. With them, he released the albums Lullaby and the Ceaseless Roar (2014) and Carry Fire (2017). His music continued to mix rock with folk and world music sounds.
Legacy and Influence
Robert Plant is seen as a true music legend. His powerful singing and stage presence have influenced countless singers. Artists like Freddie Mercury of Queen and Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses have said they were inspired by him.
He has won many awards for his music. In 2009, he was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen of England for his services to music. He was also added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Led Zeppelin in 1995. Magazines like Rolling Stone and Hit Parader have named him one of the greatest singers of all time.
Personal Life
Plant married Maureen Wilson in 1968, and they had three children. They divorced in 1983. He has a deep interest in Welsh history and is a big fan of the Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. football team. He is a vice-president of the club.
