Big Events of 1674
A Peace Treaty and a New City Name
On February 19, 1674, two powerful countries, England and the Netherlands, signed an important agreement. This agreement was called the Treaty of Westminster. It helped to end a war between them.
A very big part of this treaty was about land far away. The Netherlands gave up control of a colony they had in North America. This colony was called New Amsterdam.
After the treaty was signed, New Amsterdam became part of England. The English then gave it a new name that we still use today: New York. This was a major moment in the history of what would become the United States.
