Dov Shilansky (Hebrew: דב שילנסקי) was an important Israeli lawyer and politician. He was born on March 21, 1924, and passed away on December 9, 2010. He served as the Speaker of the Knesset (Israel's parliament) from 1988 to 1992.

Dov Shilansky's Early Life and Military Service
Dov Shilansky was born in a place called Šiauliai, in Lithuania. He and his family survived a very difficult time in history known as The Holocaust. Later, he joined a group called the Irgun and helped lead their activities in Italy.
In 1948, he moved to Israel, which is called making aliyah. He arrived on a ship named the Altalena. He became a brave officer in the Israeli army. He fought in important wars like the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, the Six-Day War, and the Yom Kippur War. He also worked in Civil Defense and as an educational officer for many years.
Education and Legal Career
Dov Shilansky studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He earned a special degree called an LL.B. After his studies, he worked as a lawyer. He was also a member of important legal groups, like the Ethics Committee of the Israel Bar Association.
He passed away in Tel Aviv, Israel, on December 9, 2010, when he was 86 years old.

Becoming a Member of the Knesset
In 1977, he was elected to the Knesset, which is Israel's parliament. He was a member of the Likud political party. As a new member, he was chosen to represent the Knesset on a special committee. This committee helped choose judges for the country.
He was re-elected to the Knesset in 1981. After that, he became a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. This meant he helped the Prime Minister with important tasks.
Serving as Speaker of the Knesset
Dov Shilansky was re-elected to the Knesset two more times, in 1984 and 1988. After the 1988 elections, he was chosen for a very important role: Speaker of the Knesset. The Speaker is like the leader of the parliament's meetings.
After the 1992 elections, he served as the Deputy Speaker. This meant he helped the new Speaker.
Running for President
In 1993, Dov Shilansky decided to run for President. This is a very high honor in Israel. However, he was not elected, and Ezer Weizman became President instead.
He lost his seat in the Knesset in the 1996 elections. Even after that, his party often included his name on their election lists as a sign of respect for his long service.
