Rafael Sperafico was a Brazilian racing driver. He was born on April 22, 1981, in Toledo, Paraná. Rafael came from a family of racers; his cousins Ricardo, Rodrigo, and Alexandre were also racing drivers.

Racing Career

Early Races in America

Rafael started his racing journey in the United States. From 2000 to 2002, he competed in a series called the Barber Dodge Pro Series. This was a stepping stone for many young drivers. In his last year, 2002, he performed very well and finished as the second-best driver in the championship.

Racing in Europe

In 2003, Rafael moved to Europe to race in the Euro Formula 3000 series. This was a challenging championship. He finished 15th overall that year, scoring two points. His cousins Ricardo, Rodrigo, and Alexandre had also raced in a similar series called FIA International Formula 3000 before him.

Back in Brazil

Later, in 2006, Rafael returned to race in Brazil. He took part in the Renault Super Clio Cup Brazil. He showed good skill and finished fourth in the championship standings.

His Final Race

On December 9, 2007, Rafael Sperafico was racing in a Stock Car Light event. This race was held at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace track in Brazil. It was a support race for the main Stock Car Brasil championship. His older cousins, Ricardo and Rodrigo, were competing in the main event that day.

During the race, on the sixth lap, Rafael lost control of his car. This happened on a fast left-hand turn just before the finish line. His car hit the wall at high speed. After the impact, his car bounced back onto the track. Another driver, Renato Russo, then crashed into Rafael's car, causing a pile-up with several other cars.

The race was immediately stopped. Medical teams quickly arrived to help. Sadly, Rafael died from his injuries at the scene. Renato Russo also suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. He was in a serious but stable condition and was released from the hospital a week later. Other drivers had minor injuries.

On the same day, Rafael's cousin, Rodrigo, finished second in the 2007 Stock Car Brasil Championship. A few years later, Gustavo Sondermann, who was Rafael's teammate, was also killed in a very similar crash at the same corner of the track.
