Major Events of 1669
- March 11 – Mount Etna, a huge volcano in Sicily, Italy, erupted with great force. This eruption destroyed the town of Nicolosi and sadly caused the deaths of about 20,000 people.
- July – The Hanseatic League held its very last official meeting in Lübeck, Germany. This was a powerful group of merchant cities that had worked together for over 400 years to control trade in Northern Europe. Their final meeting marked the end of an important era in European history.
- September 27 – The Siege of Candia finally ended after 21 long years. This was a very long battle between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice for control of the city of Candia (now Heraklion) on the island of Crete. The Ottoman Empire won, taking control of the city.

- A new element called Phosphorus was discovered by a German alchemist named Hennig Brand. He was trying to find the "philosopher's stone" (something that could turn metals into gold), but instead, he found this glowing substance.
- The famous Italian violin maker Antonio Stradivari made his very first violin this year. His violins are still considered some of the best and most valuable musical instruments in the world.
