Key Events of 1666
The Great Fire of London
One of the most famous events of 1666 was the Great Fire of London. This terrible fire destroyed most of the city of London in England. It started on September 2nd and burned for four days.
How the Fire Started
The fire began in a bakery on Pudding Lane. London at that time had many wooden buildings packed closely together. A long, dry summer had made everything very dry. Strong winds helped the fire spread quickly from house to house.
Fighting the Flames
People tried to put out the fire with buckets of water, but it was too big. They also used fire hooks to pull down houses, creating gaps to stop the fire. Eventually, they used gunpowder to blow up buildings. This created large firebreaks that finally helped to control the blaze.
London Rises Again
The Great Fire destroyed about 13,200 houses, 87 churches, and St. Paul's Cathedral. Even though many buildings were lost, only a few people died. After the fire, London was rebuilt with stronger, safer brick and stone buildings. This made the city much safer from future fires.
The year 1666 also saw important naval battles. Countries often fought over trade routes and power.
The St. James's Day Battle
On August 4th, a major sea battle took place. This was the St. James' Day Battle, fought between the English and Dutch navies. It was one of the biggest naval battles of the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The English navy won this battle, which was a big victory for them at the time.
