The year 1668 was a time of important changes and new beginnings across Europe. Countries made peace, new institutions were founded, and famous plays were first performed.

Important Events

  • In January, three powerful countries – England, the Netherlands, and Sweden – formed an agreement called the Triple Alliance. They teamed up to stop France from taking over more land.
  • On February 13, a peace treaty was signed in Lisbon, Portugal. This treaty was between Afonso VI of Portugal, the King of Portugal, and Carlos II, the King of Spain. Charles II of England, the King of England, helped them reach an agreement. The treaty officially recognized Afonso VI as the rightful king of Portugal. As part of the deal, Portugal gave the city of Ceuta to Spain.
  • The first Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle was signed, which officially ended a war called the War of Devolution. This war was mainly fought between France and Spain over land.
  • Bishop Isaac Barrow started a special fund to create a university on the Isle of Man. This university later became known as King William's College.
  • The famous French writer Molière had the first performance of his funny play, Tartuffe.
  • The British East India Company, a powerful trading company, took control of the city of Mumbai (then called Bombay) in India.
  • The First National Bank of Europe was founded in Stockholm, Sweden. It was called "Riskbank," and it was a very important step for banking in Europe.
  • Emperor Yohannes I of Ethiopia held a big meeting of church leaders in Gondar. At this meeting, they decided to ask all Roman Catholics to leave Ethiopia.
