Common year starting on Monday facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This article is about a special kind of calendar year. It's for any common year that starts on a Monday. A common year is a year with 365 days, which means it's not a leap year (a year with 366 days). When a common year begins on a Monday, it means January 1st of that year falls on a Monday.

For example, in the Gregorian calendar (the one most of the world uses today), years like 1973, 1979, 1990, 2001, 2007, 2018, and 2029 are all common years that started on a Monday. Even the year 1900 was a common year starting on a Monday in the Gregorian calendar, which was a bit unusual!

In the older Julian calendar, years like 2013 and 2019 (if they were still using that calendar) would have been common years starting on a Monday.

What is a Common Year?

A common year is a regular year that has 365 days. This is different from a leap year, which has an extra day (February 29th), making it 366 days long. Most years are common years. Leap years happen about every four years to help our calendar stay in sync with the Earth's orbit around the Sun.

Why Do Years Start on Different Days?

Because a year has 365 days, and 365 divided by 7 (the number of days in a week) leaves a remainder of 1, the day of the week for January 1st shifts by one day each year. For example, if January 1st was a Monday this year, it will be a Tuesday next year (unless it's a leap year, which makes it shift by two days).

So, a "common year starting on Monday" is simply a year that has 365 days and its first day, January 1st, falls on a Monday. This means the entire pattern of days for that year will be the same as any other common year starting on a Monday.
