Ancient and Medieval Times

  • 610 – Heraclius arrived in Constantinople and became the new Byzantine Emperor.
  • 816 – King Louis the Pious was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by the Pope.
  • 1143 – Portugal officially became a kingdom after the Treaty of Zamora was signed. This treaty recognized Portugal's independence from the Kingdom of León.

  • 1789 – During the French Revolution, a large group of women marched to Versailles. This event showed a big shift in power away from the king and queen.
  • 1813 – In the War of 1812, American forces won an important battle against British and Native Canadian forces near Detroit. This was called the Battle of the Thames.
