The Aztec Empire Faces Challenges
In June 1520, the powerful Aztec Empire in what is now Mexico faced a major conflict. Spanish explorers, led by Hernán Cortés, had arrived in their capital city, Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs, led by their emperor Moctezuma II, fought bravely against the Spanish.
During this time, Moctezuma II died. There are different stories about how he died, but his death marked a turning point in the conflict. The Aztecs eventually forced the Spanish out of their city in an event sometimes called "La Noche Triste" (The Sad Night). However, this was not the end of the fight for the Aztec Empire.
The Stockholm Bloodbath
On November 8, 1520, a terrible event known as the Stockholm Bloodbath happened in Sweden. King Christian II of Denmark, who also ruled Sweden at the time, had many Swedish nobles and important people executed. He did this to try and strengthen his power and stop anyone from opposing him.
This event was very violent and led to a lot of anger among the Swedish people. It helped spark a rebellion that eventually led to Sweden becoming an independent country, separate from Danish rule.
