Major Events of 1517
Ottoman Empire Expands
In 1517, the powerful Ottoman Empire continued to grow. Its leader, Selim I, was a strong sultan. His armies were very successful in battle.
Conquest of Egypt
On January 22, 1517, the Ottomans fought the Battle of Ridanieh. They defeated the main army of the Mamluks in Egypt. The Mamluks were led by Touman Bey. Soon after, on February 3, the Ottoman forces captured the city of Cairo. This was a very important victory.
Selim I Becomes Caliph
