Important Events of 1522
New Pope in Rome
- January 9 – A new leader was chosen for the Catholic Church. Adrian Dedens became Pope Adrian VI. The Pope is the head of the worldwide Catholic Church.
Aztec Ruler's End
- February 26 – In what is now Mexico, Cuauhtémoc, the last ruler of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, was put to death. This happened under the orders of Hernán Cortés, a Spanish explorer and soldier known as a conquistador.
Battle for Milan
- April 22 – A big fight called the Battle of Bicocca took place in Italy. French and Swiss soldiers, led by Odet de Lautrec, tried to take back the city of Milan. But they were defeated by Spanish forces. This loss forced them to leave the area and go into Venetian territory.
Siege of Rhodes Begins
- July 28 – The powerful Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I started a long attack on the island of Rhodes. This island was defended by a group of warrior monks called the Knights of St. John.
First Trip Around the World
- September 6 – An incredible journey was completed! The ship Vittoria returned to Sanlcar de Barrameda in Spain. It was one of the few ships left from Ferdinand Magellan's expedition. This ship became the first to ever sail completely around the world.
Knights of Rhodes Fight On
- December 18 – After many months, Ottoman soldiers finally broke into the city of Rhodes. But the Knights of St. John kept fighting bravely in the streets.
Surrender and New Home
- December 20 – Suleiman the Magnificent accepted the surrender of the remaining Knights. He allowed them to leave Rhodes safely. These Knights later moved to the island of Malta and became known as the Knights of Malta.

- The first Diet of Nuremberg took place. A "Diet" was a formal meeting or assembly, often of leaders or representatives.
