- 1575 – Roman Catholic forces led by Henry I, Duke of Guise, defeated the Protestants in the Battle of Dormans.
- 1580 – Over 600 Papal troops arrived in Ireland to help in a rebellion.

- 1918 – The ship RMS Leinster was sunk by a German submarine, causing a great loss of life (564 people) in the Irish Sea.
- 1920 – A vote in Carinthia decided that most of the area should stay part of Austria.
- 1928 – Chiang Kai-shek became the leader of the Republic of China.
- 1933 – A United Airlines Boeing 247 plane was destroyed in an accident caused by someone on purpose. This was the first known case like this in commercial aviation.
