Key Events of 1332
Battles and Conflicts
In 1332, there were significant battles, especially in Scotland. These conflicts shaped the history of the region.
The Battle of Dupplin Moor
On August 10 and 11, 1332, the Battle of Dupplin Moor took place in Scotland. This was a major fight during the Second War of Scottish Independence. A smaller English army, led by Edward Balliol, surprisingly defeated a much larger Scottish force. This victory helped Edward Balliol briefly become King of Scotland.
The Battle of Annan
Later that year, on December 16, another important battle happened in Scotland: the Battle of Annan. This battle was a response to the events at Dupplin Moor. Scottish forces loyal to David II of Scotland attacked Edward Balliol's supporters. This led to Edward Balliol fleeing Scotland, showing how quickly power could change hands.
Campaigns of Amda Seyon I
Far away in Ethiopia, Amda Seyon I, who was the Emperor, began his military campaigns. These started around February 18, 1332 (though some say it might have been in 1329). He led his armies into the southern Muslim provinces. These campaigns were important for expanding his empire and showing his power in the region.
Political Changes and Alliances
The year 1332 also saw new political developments, particularly in Europe.
Lucerne Joins Switzerland
On November 7, 1332, the city of Lucerne made a big decision. It joined the Swiss Confederation. This was an important step in forming what we now know as Switzerland. Lucerne joined with three other areas: Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden. This alliance helped create a stronger and more united group of states.
New City Documentation
Târgu Mureş First Recorded
In what is now Romania, the city of Târgu Mureş was officially mentioned for the first time in 1332. It appeared in a papal registry under the name Novum Forum Siculorum. This record is important because it shows when the city was first recognized in official documents.
