Robert Dean Silva Burnquist, born on October 10, 1976, is a professional skateboarder from Brazil and the United States. He is famous for his amazing skills on a skateboard. In 2010, he made history by being the first skateboarder to land a "fakie 900." This trick involves spinning 900 degrees (two and a half full turns) while riding backward. He was only the fifth person ever to complete a 900-degree spin.

Early Life and Skateboarding Start

Bob Burnquist was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His father is American with Swedish roots, and his mother is Brazilian. He has two sisters, Rebecca and Milena. Bob started skateboarding in São Paulo when he was 11 years old. By the time he was 14, he had already become a professional skateboarder. He is a citizen of both Brazil and the United States.

Bob Burnquist is known for his unique skateboarding style. He is especially good at "switch stance" skateboarding, which means riding with his non-dominant foot forward. He also creates new tricks on vert ramps. One of his special tricks is called the "Wee Willy grind."

X Games Success

Bob has won many medals at the X Games, which are like the Olympics for extreme sports.

  • In 2000, he won the "Best Trick" contest at the X Games. He did a "Fakie 5–0" grind with a "fakie kickflip" off the rail.
  • His biggest win came in 2001 at the X Games vert contest. He performed a perfect run with tricks no one had ever seen before. He earned a score of 98 out of 100, which was one of the highest scores ever given in X Games skateboarding.
  • In 2005, he won another gold medal in the X Games "Best Trick" vert contest.
  • He continued to win gold medals in the "Skateboard Big Air" event. He won four times in a row from 2011 to 2013.
  • In 2013, he tied BMX rider Dave Mirra for the most X Games medals ever, with 24.
  • Later in 2013, he won another gold medal, making him the person with the most X Games medals in history, with 25.
  • At the X Games Austin 2015, Bob won gold in Skateboard Big Air. He did this even though he had a broken arm!
  • He also won another gold medal in "Big Air Doubles" at the same event. This was a new event where he teamed up with BMX rider Morgan Wade.
  • He finished the 2015 X Games with a silver medal in "Vert Best Trick." This brought his total to 30 Summer X Games medals, including 14 gold medals. Both of these numbers were new records.

Retirement from X Games

At the X Games Minneapolis 2017, Bob Burnquist announced he was retiring from the X Games. He had won at least one medal almost every year from 1997 to 2015. He holds the record for the most medals won at the X Games by one person, with 30 medals in total. He also shares the record for the most gold medals at the Summer X Games, with 14. Bob is the only person who competed in every single X Games summer event from the very first one in 1995 until 2017.

Bob Burnquist's Dreamland Skate Park

Bob Burnquist has an amazing private skate park at his home in Vista, California, called "Dreamland."

Features of Dreamland

  • The first part of Dreamland was a wooden vert bowl, which was later made with concrete.
  • Then, a metal full pipe was added.
  • He also built a loop with an opening in the roof and a corkscrew ramp.
  • Many famous skateboarders, like Tony Hawk, have skated in the Vert Bowl. It has been shown in many magazines and videos.

The Megaramp

The biggest part of Dreamland is the Megaramp. This is one of the few permanent Mega Ramps in the world. It has a huge gap jump (50–70 feet) followed by a 30-foot quarterpipe. Bob lets other professional skateboarders use his Megaramp. This helps them train for competitions and invent new tricks. Skaters like Danny Way and Jake Brown have used this ramp.

Recent Additions and Videos

  • In 2013, a new "hip ramp" was added to the Megaramp. This was built for filming Bob's video called Dreamland.
  • Also in 2013, Bob and his sponsor Oakley released a big video called Oakley's-Bob Burnquist's "Dreamland". All the skateboarding in this video was filmed at his Dreamland park.

Media Appearances

Bob Burnquist has appeared in many different types of media.

  • In 1994, he was in a short clip on the TV show Bill Nye the Science Guy.
  • He has been a character in many Tony Hawk's video games, starting with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
