1258 – The city of Baghdad surrendered to the Mongol army. This marked the end of the Abbasid Caliphate, a powerful Islamic empire.
1306 – A major event happened in Dumfries, Scotland, that helped start the Wars of Scottish Independence. Robert the Bruce had a serious disagreement with John Comyn, which led to Comyn's death and kicked off a revolution for Scotland's freedom.
1355 – A big fight, known as the St Scholastica Day riot, broke out in Oxford, England, between students and local people.
1502 – The famous explorer Vasco da Gama began his second journey from Lisbon, Portugal, heading towards India.
1567 – Lord Darnley, who was the husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, was found dead after an explosion at the Kirk o' Field house in Edinburgh, Scotland. Many believed it was an assassination.

1814 – During the Napoleonic Wars, French forces won the Battle of Champaubert against the armies of Russia and Prussia.
1840 – Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
1846 – In the First Anglo-Sikh War, the British army defeated the Sikhs in the Battle of Sobraon, which was the last major battle of the war.
