About Ellen Wood's Life
Ellen Price was born in Worcester in 1814. In 1836, she married Henry Wood. He worked in banking and shipping. They lived in Dauphiné, France, for 20 years.
Later, Henry's business had problems. So, the family moved back to England. They settled near London. Ellen Wood then started writing to support her family. Henry Wood passed away in 1866.

In 1867, Ellen Wood bought a magazine called Argosy. She wrote many articles for it herself. Other famous writers also contributed. These included Christina Rossetti. Wood was the editor until she died in 1887. Her son, Charles Wood, then took over.
Ellen Wood's books were translated into many languages. People in France and Russia read her stories. Even the famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy enjoyed her novel In the Maze.
