Bobby Portis Jr. (born February 10, 1995) is an American professional basketball player. He plays for the Milwaukee Bucks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Bobby played college basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks. In 2015, he was named a second-team All-American. The Chicago Bulls picked him in the first round of the 2015 NBA draft. Bobby Portis won an NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021.

High School Basketball Journey
Bobby Portis played high school basketball at Hall High School in Little Rock. He was a very talented player there. In 2013, he was named a McDonald's All-American and a Parade All-American. He also earned the title of Mr. Basketball of Arkansas. When he decided to play for Arkansas, he was the first McDonald's All-American from the state to join the Razorbacks since 1992.
College Basketball Career
Freshman Year at Arkansas
As a freshman at Arkansas, Bobby Portis played very well. He averaged 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. Because of his strong performance, he was named to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team. He also made the second-team All-SEC.
Sophomore Season Highlights
In his second year, Portis was chosen for the preseason All-SEC team. He helped lead the Razorbacks to be ranked among the top 25 teams in the country. During this season, he averaged 17.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, 1.2 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He was one of only two players from the SEC to be a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award. This award is given to the best college basketball player in the nation.
On March 10, 2015, the coaches of the SEC named Portis the SEC Player of the Year. This was a big honor, as he was the first Arkansas Razorback to win this award since Corliss Williamson in 1995. By the end of his college career, Bobby Portis was seen as one of the top players in college basketball. Many expected him to be a first-round pick in the upcoming 2015 NBA draft.
Professional NBA Career
Starting with the Chicago Bulls (2015–2019)
On June 25, 2015, the Chicago Bulls picked Bobby Portis as the 22nd overall player in the 2015 NBA draft. He signed his first NBA contract with the Bulls on July 7, 2015. In his very first NBA game on November 3, 2015, he scored 10 points.
On December 19, 2015, Portis had one of his best games early in his career. He scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the New York Knicks. This happened when some of the Bulls' main players were tired from a long game the night before.
In October 2016, the Bulls decided to keep Portis for another season. On January 6, 2017, he briefly played for the Windy City Bulls, which is Chicago's minor league team, but was called back to the main team the next day. He scored a season-high 19 points in a win against the Boston Celtics on February 16, 2017. Later, on March 18, 2017, he set a new career high with 22 points in a win over the Utah Jazz.
In October 2017, Portis was suspended by the Bulls for eight games after an incident with a teammate during practice. When he returned on November 7, he scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds. On December 15, he set a new career high with 27 points and 12 rebounds against the Milwaukee Bucks. On February 22, 2018, he scored an amazing 38 points, which was another career high.
During the 2018-2019 season, Portis faced some injuries. He missed several weeks due to a knee sprain in October 2018 and an ankle sprain in December 2018. Despite these setbacks, he continued to play well when healthy. On January 30, 2019, he scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half of a win against the Miami Heat.
Moving to Washington and New York (2019–2020)
On February 6, 2019, Bobby Portis was traded to the Washington Wizards. In his first game for the Wizards, he scored 30 points, helping his new team win against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
After his time with the Wizards, Portis signed with the New York Knicks on July 9, 2019. He played one season for the Knicks before becoming a free agent in November 2020.
Joining the Milwaukee Bucks (2020–Present)
On November 26, 2020, Bobby Portis signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. He quickly became an important player for the team. In the 2020-2021 season, he had the third-highest three-point shooting percentage in the entire NBA, at 47.1%.
Winning the NBA Championship (2021)
During the 2021 NBA playoffs, Portis played a key role for the Bucks. In Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Atlanta Hawks, he scored 15 points. On July 1, 2021, he started his first career playoff game in place of an injured teammate. He scored 22 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and had 3 assists and 3 steals. The crowd cheered for him, chanting "Bobby!" The Bucks went on to win the series against the Hawks.
The Bucks then faced the Phoenix Suns in the 2021 NBA Finals. Bobby Portis scored 16 points in the deciding Game 6, helping the Milwaukee Bucks win the NBA championship!
Continued Success with the Bucks
After winning the championship, Portis re-signed with the Bucks in August 2021. He continued to have strong performances. On November 24, 2021, he scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Detroit Pistons. On February 5, 2022, he made six three-pointers and scored a season-high 30 points in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers. In the 2022 playoffs, he helped the Bucks win Game 3 against the Chicago Bulls with 18 points and 16 rebounds.
In June 2022, Portis signed a new four-year contract with the Bucks. On December 3, 2022, he scored 20 points and had a season-high 7 assists against the Charlotte Hornets. On March 9, 2023, he scored a season-high 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against the Brooklyn Nets. In April 2023, Portis earned his first NBA Player of the Week award. He finished third in voting for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award, which goes to the best player who usually comes off the bench.
On December 16, 2023, Portis scored 31 points, his highest total while playing for the Bucks, in a win over the Detroit Pistons. On March 17, 2024, he again scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Phoenix Suns.
In February 2025, Portis was suspended for 25 games. When he returned on April 8, he played a key role in a comeback win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. On April 22, during the first round of the playoffs, Portis had 28 points and 12 rebounds in a game against the Indiana Pacers.
Playing for Team USA
Bobby Portis was part of the United States national team that played in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The team finished fourth in that tournament.

Personal Life and Community Work
Bobby Portis has shared that his faith is very important to him. He believes that God has guided him and helped him achieve his goals.
Portis also has a foundation called the Bobby Portis Foundation. This charity helps single mothers in Arkansas by creating special programs and initiatives for them.
In October 2022, Bobby Portis started a campaign with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Milwaukee mayor Cavalier Johnson. This campaign aims to help reduce reckless driving and speeding in Wisconsin, making roads safer for everyone.
