During World War I, he fought on the Palestine front in 1917. He was captured by the British army in Egypt in 1918. After he was released, he joined the Turkish War of Independence. He fought on both the southern and western fronts.

Sunay continued his military education and became a staff officer in 1930. A staff officer helps plan and organize military operations. He rose through the ranks, becoming a general in 1949. By 1959, he was a four-star general, which is a very high rank.

Becoming President

On March 14, 1966, Cemal Gürsel, who was the president at the time, appointed Sunay to the senate. The senate is like a part of the government that helps make laws.

When President Gürsel became too ill to continue, Cevdet Sunay was chosen as the fifth president. The Grand National Assembly of Turkey, which is Turkey's main parliament, elected him on March 28, 1966.

He served as president for seven years, until March 28, 1973. During his time as president, there were some difficult times in Turkey. There were student protests and some threats of military takeovers. However, he managed to keep his position and lead the country. After his presidency, he became a permanent senator.

Cevdet Sunay married Atıfet in 1929. They had three children together.
