Ferit Sadi Melen (born November 2, 1906 – died September 3, 1988) was an important Turkish politician. He worked for the government and later became the Prime Minister of Turkey.

Early Life and Education

Ferit Melen was born in Van, which was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time. He finished high school in Bursa. After that, he went to Ankara University and studied finance. He graduated in 1931.

Career in Government

After university, Ferit Melen started working for the government right away. He even went to Paris, France, for a year to learn more about how the Ministry of Finance works. When he came back to Turkey, he became an inspector in the Ministry of Finance. By 1943, he was promoted to a very important role as a general director in the ministry.

Entering Politics

Ferit Melen first became a politician in 1950. He was elected as a representative (called a deputy) for Van Province. He was part of the Republican People's Party (CHP). After his first term, he didn't run for parliament in 1954. Instead, he worked as a chartered accountant until he retired in 1959. But he returned to politics in 1957, when he was elected as a deputy for Van again.

Key Government Roles

Ferit Melen held several important positions in the Turkish government:

  • Minister of Finance: He served as the Minister of Finance twice. The first time was from 1962 to 1965, under Prime Minister İsmet İnönü.
  • Minister of National Defense: He was also the Minister of National Defense two times. The first time was from 1971 to 1972, in the government led by Nihat Erim. His second time was from 1975 to 1977, under Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel.

Becoming Prime Minister

In 1972, after Prime Minister Nihat Erim resigned, Ferit Melen was chosen to be the new Prime Minister. He led a government that was supported by the military. He served as Prime Minister from May 22, 1972, until April 15, 1973.

Later Political Career

Ferit Melen was a member of the Senate, which is another part of the Turkish parliament, from 1964 to 1979. He was appointed as a senator again in 1980, but his term ended shortly after a military coup that year. In 1983, he was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly (the main parliament) as a candidate for the Nationalist Democracy Party.

Legacy

Ferit Melen passed away on September 3, 1988. His son, Mithat Melen, also became a civil servant and tried to enter politics later. The airport in Van, his hometown, is named after him: Ferit Melen Airport.
